Which Decorations?

How do I tell which decorations will advance the decorations rating of a particular exhibit? If I click 'decorate' on the exhibit it takes me to a decoration page but not all the decorations on that page advance the level, and I'm not sure how to tell other than just by placing stuff and checking and then trying other stuff. I feel like I am missing something.

At the top, you can filter decorations by theme, and thus give prehistory exhibits prehistory decorations and the like. Also, on the exhibit info popup, the middle tab will show you one specific decoration that it needs to reach max Buzz, which is different from its decoration rating. Sometimes it takes a while to unlock the item needed to give it the buzz perk, though, so don't be surprised if it mentions an item (the hologram projector is a big one that takes a while to unlock) that you don't have access to yet.

All decorations should boost the decoration rating, although there are diminishing returns if you keep using the same one. I think if they match theme, there's a bonus to decoration rating as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

So with the Sound Stage for example, the theme is "General" but there are lots of "General" Items that have no effect if I place them.

EDIT: Okay wait I am misunderstanding. I assumed 4/5 meant I needed one more item. I needed several items to cover the last. It's not the number of items, it's decoration level 5 which is the same as room level 5 in previous TP games!

There is a green bar displayed along with the number for decoration rating. Every decoration you add increases the bar by some amount. You need to fill the bar to go up 1.
This is also just like the room level in previous TP games, so you may have noticed that already, but I thought I'd mention it in case you had not noticed the green bar at all.

Also note that TPM does have room levels as well, for the various rooms.

That's one of the ones that unlocks down the line at like Lv 20 in Space or something like that (don't have the game open, sorry). You'll get access to it eventually, but nothing before you unlock the actual hologram projector will fulfill that buzz.

There's a search box on the decorations item menu. If you search by "Hologram" it will show you it and mousing over it will tell you the unlock conditions.
