Best way to play on Steam Deck?

I played the heck out of this game back in the day, and wanted to try and play it again on my Steam Deck. But so far, the game feels very unfriendly to the Deck- no matter what controls I try to use, everything feels very unintuitive and certain things just don't work. Can anyone recommend a controller layout they've used on the Deck, or possibly a mod that makes it a bit more controller-friendly?
