Purpose of Dragons?
I'm at the second last mission on ng+. Similar to how useless Berserkers were in normal, Dragons are useless in normal as well as in ng+.

What am I missing? How do I use them right?

You thought Berserkers were useless at any point?

As for Dragons, I'm not too teerribly far yet (just through Normal), but I like to put them down near the start of waves with my Knights to help with piling on damage by getting enemies on fire before they mode down the line to my main force with Ice Mages slowing/freezing and most fire effects are worn off.

Takes a little bit to get the extra Psi to start getting to their fire safely, but it works great for me.
The only time I use dragons is when everything else is already in play. It's technically an expensive berserker with fire splash damage. I use it for fodder, really - although I've read that ROAR can be useful against the snail masses.

Wait till you get the "NOM" skill :)

For me, they are my tanks. They have great HP and def stats and have a larger attack area, so they can hit things that your other melee units can't. Powered up, they can weather a lot of damages and dish it out in return. I put them either ahead of my knights to draw the first round of mass hits or at intersecting angles that smaller humans can't hit from both sides. Nom~! :angrytitan:

I only have 2 dragons in my setup, and they kick backside. They are good all-rounders,
pack a punch, have melee and magic/distance weapons...
Yes, they are quite expensive. Equally yes, they are awesome.

This. I put the dragon at the back, near Azra. All the other heroes will whittle away at monsters life. If they manage to survive that, the dragon will either use Bite (thanks to Nom) and save the other skills, or use a higher skill and still wipe it out.
