No need to press E.
Just use the grappel as usual, only on a red flashing enemy.
The grapnel has a minimum range. You need to shoot an enemy into execution range or ahve it put there by a teammate, then grapnel it from a distance.
If you did it correctly your char will automatically use an execution after the grapnel with no further input required.
However it doesnt lock enemies into being executed by you until the execution actually starts so half the time you will realize that someone else just activated an execution on the target while youre still grapnel*ing towards them.
(To do it as others have probably already said, Grapple to an executable enemy, but don't press E, it'll auto-execute, but activates slower than normal. You also have to compete with your teammates who probably all just spam execute. Which is extra annoying when playing Bulwark as he can full heal himself without a perk/teammates with a perk, if he plants his banner right before an execute. Your teammates just have to not be braindead and not be spamming execute 24/7)
Just need to activate grappel. don't hit the E. yeah you can hit the E, but that supersedes the grapple execution. just use the grapple and the execution animation will trigger and refund the charge.
