It's true that years can pass between the announcement and the actual production.
But in this case, we don't say anything; we advance the project internally for 1 to 2 years. Then we make an announcement with visuals, cutscenes, and maybe even a little gameplay.
Now, we just have a disgusting visual to announce the third game, when the second game came out 6 months ago. It makes no sense. If it's official, the people who did this are abysmally incompetent.
(They might release a sequel on smartphones, given the visuals.)
Not to mention that resources aren't unlimited, just like budgets. Announcing SM3 now and so soon is just like saying that SM2 will be abandoned before it's even a year old...
It's extremely disappointing. I thought we were going to get DLC with additional classes, maybe even Terminators, or even Sisters of Battle.
It's just pathetic.
Call me old , but I still rather have a complete game with one or two add-ons instead of a half finished game which may or may not will be finisher in twelve years.
Man look at stellaris how messed up things can be become. And it wasn't even a live service game to begin with! They changed so much, added so much, the ai is unable to use the new mechanics properly. Netcode is still ♥♥♥♥.
Na, man, rather take the lessons you learned and start new with a better basis and framework.
I'm happy for saber if sm2 got enough budget to do a sm3. Hopefully they got more budget than last time and we get longer better campaign.
I'd be happy with a solid 12 to 15 hour campaign with the same amount of side content like SM3.
I'd be happy to keep getting more operations as long as they bring with some more stories to dip my toes into.
No. They assigned resources to take the first steps towards 3. They put pen to paper to list it as an actual project, financially. You all have never been involved in large scale project development, and it shows - they won't even have a story idea, let alone a full pitch yet.
SM3 will be YEARS away, and you know what is going to be baked into their financial plans to support it?
More people paying money towards SM2 stuff.
Stop with the doomsaying already.
I think the doomsaying is indeed silly, however, why announce anything at all if it's years out and they have nothing to show? They're killing their own hype before they even get something presentable.
Also let's not ignore the fact that this industry is predatory and vitriolic towards its customers, they don't want a bit more success, they want infinite success, they don't want a bit more profit, they want all the profit in the world infinitely increasing with no regression whatsoever. This exact same mindset that focus entertainment are showcasing by making this decision to announce this early with nothing to show for it is the same kind of red flag that should pop up in our memory when Ubisoft shows off a pre-rendered cg trailer of something with no gameplay.
This stinks of corporate cash-grab and despite whatever Saber claims, they're NOT focusing on Space Marine 2 anymore. They just aren't, they don't get to make that decision and they'd never say anything that would spook the shareholders nor get them in trouble with their publisher. I'm not blaming them, but I'm saying there's a language to this stuff and this smells fishy.
Or perhaps its not even for us at all, and its to show investors how their company is going to continue to grow for years to come with money-making projects, right at the year's financial assessment periods?
If it's to build excitement, it's too early. Any time a game does this so early it has resulted in pretty scathing results to their detriment. I don't think any of us need a reminder of Duke Nukem Forever, Aliens Colonial Marines, the Last Guardian, TESVI, marketing is largely about timing and this is by far some of the poorest possible timing if the intent is to build excitement. It will mostly create a feeling of uncertainty in the fanbase that were expecting more out of Space Marine 2's life cycle.
I can't remember where but I swear I remember them stating somewhere early on that they intended 2 season's worth of content for SM2 before they reached the " end " for it at the time. I wish I could find it. That being said, even if that was bogus I still don't see it being popular for ANY game no matter how well received it was to be talking about sequels less than 2 months, less than 8 months even since the launch of it. Both of which they have done. It sets a very worrying precedent.
If it's for shareholders, yeah I buy that. The shareholders are absolute morons with no clue how this industry works. They're the most knee-jerk reaction, panic induced, skyline apartment dwelling suits in the world. They have 0 concept of how anything works. They just want " Money number go up good! "
Just like Cadians, he will stand.
“They are working on SM3?!? Lets GOOOOOOOOO!”
The 5 salty people between vacations : “I dont like the main weapon of the 40k series, and spore mines / terminators / rubric marines beat me so nerf plz!”
I think one of these two groups might get more attention.
Halo also wasn't baiting people with $100 season pass ultimate editions suggesting "drip fed content."
