you can get a pretty short boost with the 10% reduction and 20% reduction. I think the only problem with assault currently is the same issue with all melee, how little push back/defense you have with massive wave minoris trash packs. Currently tho assault can keep up with damage done with melta's, but their damage taken will be a lot higher for the same resault.

i second this.

it feels like they had the SM1 Assault and went up and took things form him to make new classes, like the vanguard, but in all that taking away they forgot to give him anything new.

i dont see which role the assault is to take. the vanguard is more mobile, has better hordeclear and the same singletarget damage. bulwark has the same melee damage but better defense, tactical has better hordeclear with less risk, sniper has better singletarget, heavy has bettr single and hordeclear.

but focussed on vanguard and Assault: assault looses the primary weapon (like a Melter for great hordeclear) Rolls slower, has longer animations keeping himf rom dodgeing, and what he gets is a singular extra armorblip thats either negated by "oh ♥♥♥♥ i cant get out of the situation im in because my cooldown is 60 seconds) or shredded away instantly anyway because the thunderhammer hits like a Wet Towel.
the extra armorblip does absolutely nothing for the character that charges into enemies with no added defensive options or mobility to gtfo.

the other thing is the Perks.
the assault gets a lot of perks revolving aroudn the idea of Charged attacks. harder hitting when charged, not interrupted when charged etc.
thing is though: due to the lack of mobility and attackspeed it doesnt matter if you arent inerruped during the chargeup, you are dead before you get the swing out anyway.
the othe rperks revolve around the groundpound i.e. the ability attack. too bad though you can use it rarer than grenades.
60 seconds recharge (not accurately measured, might be 45, but its f*cking long) per charge.
where es Grenades are cluttered all across the map.
to make ample use of the ability i need 2 charges, one to get in and dish out damage, one to get back out. so anywhere between 90-120seconds between combo.

i dont know if they removed all the good from the assault to promote the vanguard or if the devs never played SM1, but honestly outside of "but i wanna" and "spit" i see no reason to ever pick an assault. from what i can tell thus far he does nothing better than anyone, and isnt a jack of all trades either. an in-lore comparrisson is everyone got primaris upgrades and assault was forgotten.
everyone got the new console, assault has a Commodore.
everyone got approved for college and assault starts a minimum wage job.

sorry, a bit of rant here but i tried. i really really tried. and i can make it just abrely work with the assault on second difficulty, but f*ck me do i have to force myself, because the playstyle of the assault in SM1 is now all in the vanguard and i dont see how to make the assault work.

Edit: for constructivity. i know how to make the assault work. by patching him.
my recommendation:

-Jumpheight and hovertime from PvP mode (why nerf the Coop mode that is fun over competetive but buff it in competetive, makes no sense.)
- One extra charge (just so we have something to work with when the buttonpress is misread as short click and we dash into nonsense, wasting a charge.
- remove jetpack dash: absolutely no reason for it
- change of persk to mimic vanguards perks, bonus damage is ncie and all but how about some of those "after killing 10 people get less ranged damage" or "after ground pound take 20% less melee damage for 5 seconds"
- if you want to make the game fun over competetive: gives us a level 25 signature perk allowing us to equip primary weapons. why not, worked in SM1
- More stagger on the Thunderhammer. (who the heck thought thunderhammer is a Hordeclear weapon. that thing is meant to crack opend readnaughts but has next to no stagger. give it the same stagger as the Meltagun and all is well, i can live wiht low damage. i cant live with low damage no stagger and getting shredded to bits before i have a second swing in.

Without the melta, assault does more or just as much damage and even with melta's if you take enough risks you can keep up in damage(damage taken will obviously be higher). Melta is currently the problem, it doesnt work like a melta is supposed to, and the alternatives suck in comparison. Needs its cone reduced and its damage/penetration increased, and the other bolter weapons need a buff to adjust.

Assault either needs more pushback with its swings to protect itself from trash or a talent that regens armor more quickly with a talent(that isnt extremely gimmicky like it's end talent).

" assault does more or just as much damage and even with melta's if you take enough risks you can keep up in damage(damage taken will obviously be higher)"

exactly. you have to play better, risk more and still take more damage in the process.

"Assault either needs more pushback with its swings to protect itself from trash or a talent that regens armor more quickly with a talent(that isnt extremely gimmicky like it's end talent)."

exactly. vanguard got all the mobility, all the defensive perks, and the stronger weapon at this time. assault needs at least 2 of those things back to be on the same level.

even the classperk is a bit odd. 50% larger perfect dodge window. sounds great, until you notice your melee animation is 5x as long as that of the other classes and you cant dodge out of those. just constantly eating hits with nothing to make up for it.
