Can't hear dialogue when facing away

Does anyone know a setting to improve the clarity of dialogue you are not aimed at? Its frustrating that I can never hear the squad mates talking in the campaign as they are always walking behind me, and I keep getting guardsmen cut off mid conversation because I passed them.

Update: The auto audio format setting doesn't work. It automatically selected a format that included rear speakers when I did not have any. Manually setting the audio format fixes this.
