Assault class
Am I bad or is assault just the WORST class for PVE. basically no range. no shielding, just a ♥♥♥♥ jump pack. everything in the games seems to auto target the assault over any other class. the hammer does basically no extra damage over anything else and has no stun.

You can't shoot while in the air like in the story mode. half the time it doesn't even let you in the air it just dashes. it's also full of frame/animation lock. while "in the air" you can be hit and knocked down by almost anything in the game. can't fly over simple hand railings.

The weapons you get seem just bleh. the thunder hammer is supposed to do high damage and target multi foes but is so slow it isn't as good as anything else most of the time. the only good thing I can give the hammer is it nutty good for parrying

The normal bolt pistol just feels like trash. leaving you only the heavy bolt pistol

I even tried looking up guides for playing it and all I find online is everyone just saying in SM2 that it's the worst class in terms of balance. and playing assault in lobbies just leads to being told to change class or getting kicked

You have to hold Q to jump in the air. Tapping on Q will dash. You're likely not even noticing it but you're tapping and not holding. You have multiple charges so use them wisely. Jump, smash, kill, jump. Navigate behind the other team and slam them from behind allowing your team to do the majority of the damage. You're not the lone hero, be the distraction needed.

You also don't have to change class because someone tells you to. Pretty sure they sucked ♥♥♥♥ at their preferred class when they first started. Who gives a ♥♥♥♥. And wait, there's a kick option? Where the hell is that, I haven't seen it.

I have not experienced this yes a bad assault dies tons but a good assault is something I a have to change the entire way I play if I don't want to be destroyed over and over again.

I will try better to hold Q then! and I don't change classes for others. games are supposed to be fun not sweaty. I'll try the getting behind them though. thanks for the tip!

You shouldn't have to change your class just because someone else doesn't like it, but since we can't have doubles of the same class in lobbies it's a good idea to level up two classes at the same time, so if someone else picks your favorite you have a backup

For sure. One thing I've noticed, in pvp, is that a lot of people who play assault tend to jump while in front of the enemy team. Which is basically screaming "I'M RIGHT HERE SHOOT MEE RIGHT HERE GUYS!"

Haha, that is me in most games. always had that bad habit of "getting some" my friend spent years teaching me how tanks in most games aren't meant to just roll straight up especially when against other tanks

There is currently a known bug where sometimes the hold to jump will not work. You'll know if it's bricked or not because your yellow target marker on the ground will be gone. The only known fix for it currently is to waste a charge on the dash and that'll usually bring it back.

That aside, the general consensus right now does seem to be that Assault feels a bit lackluster overall and needs some buffs.

I know I do keep thinking of Darktide where the thunder hammer is a single target weapon where in SM2 it's supposed to be a multi target. but I keep getting out damaged in melee by most classes when playing on difficulty 3 or higher. and I feel like the charged attack just sucks.

So hearing that makes me feel a little better about me sucking butt. also so crazy to me how friendly people are here. I've always been a starwars guy, and people other there are ♥♥♥♥♥ on the steam forums

The assault class is bad in every mod right now the other close combat classes are weak too compared to the range units. This is a balance issue.

I've actually just started diving into the Operations game mode myself so I'm still messing around with different classes on difficulty 1 while deciding on my main. Jump pack bug aside, Assault with thunder hammer actually felt like one of the stronger classes to me right out of the gate, but I'm guessing it falls off hard in later difficulties based on what everyone is saying.

The Assault is good in pvp, when you flank people with it, not so much boosting right in front of them.

In pve, assault and bulwark are the worst classes. Better to kill as quickly as possible, and both dont get the weapons to accomplish this.

The game does seem to have a bug right now where sometimes the Q button just doesn't register when you hold it. Most often near areas where you are near a ledge, lower ceiling or something, as if it's pre-emptively stopping you from even trying to jump where you're not "supposed to". I guess if the yellow marker on the ground isn't visible, then it's a no-go... something that you don't notice in the heat of things.

I hope it can be fixed somehow.

With that said, I've only played Assault pretty much and just today got through a few "Substantial" level difficulties.

It's definitely a real challenge, that's for sure. In difficulties before "Substantial" I tended to be able to ground pound into big groups, then hit once and then hold the attack button for a heavy slam and that'd get an enemy to "execute" state and whatever health I had lost (and was white) I'd immediately fully regain from the finisher.

In Substantial difficulty, that wasn't viable anymore with the "Green" hammer, as I couldn't brute force someone to death fast enough so had to dive in, hit, dash out, maybe either parry or shoot a few times then go in for another swing or two.

The little dash Assault does when you press space once is your best friend, as if you dash and hit melee, you do a dash attack that seems to be much faster and that can then transition to a heavy slam if you hold the trigger. BUT also needs you to pick the moment quite well.

Also important not to spam the swings as then you're always in animation when needing to parry an attack. So patient swings, pick your openings and do not be afraid to back away. (That often leads the enemy to follow and you can then parry them and shoot the head and that regains one shield charge for you too)...

No wonder I've struggled though, as often when bumping up the difficulty I've been the one who goes down the most often. Though often also the one with most melee dmg and kills.

So definitely an class you have to play aggressively, but also not too mindlessly. Not sure if it will be viable even further in difficulty. The new purple hammer with "Fencing" seems very satisfying. 5 more damage to the green one, but 5 less speed, so it really is a slow but powerful wind up, but kills things faster for sure. Mix in some more parry skill and ... I think it might be pretty good. Though will also leave a need in the team for someone to be a good ranged player so you're not being sniped from every direction while you hulk smash everything.

I wouldn't mind though if the devs decided to buff the melee dmg to be even higher, to make the REWARD side a bit better in this high-risk-high-reward melee focused class, to rely on rapid and aggressive killing to regain health and shields.. but if the enemy damages just keep going up in difficulties, I can't see that being viable...)

(Edit: Oh and to mention, tried 3 PvP rounds and I was absolutely HORRIBLE. But it can definitely be done well, seen it on youtube haha.. It was such an embarrassing experience being the worst in every match :D I have no PvP sense though as I barely ever play PvP in games, so I got flanked all the damn time.)

I personally try to keep all 6 classes even, just so I can freely switch regardless of what is needed. Also since its a 3 player game, I would amend that advice to at least 3 classes. If you only level two, its possible you join as the 3rd player when both those are taken.
