The simplest solution will be steps. 5 steps = more or less, 5 meters. I mean your characters steps in game. You can check and practise it in the sparring room, count the steps and check the distance. I did that when i wanted to measure what the effective range of mutli melta in pvp is - I stood 10 steps away from a cargo crate and shot, took another step back and so on.
His banner contest health is even shorter, to get safe distance its almost next to his brother.
