AFAIK there a very different feelings towards Deathwatch in different chapters. Some (like Smurfs) regard service in Deathwatch as a noble and honourable, some others send there only dregs and loosers.

its an honor if you go there voluntarily for a limited ammount of time, in that case you get to keep your original chapter symbol and color on your right shoulder.

its not an honor if you get send there as punishment/join them as black shield

Deathwatch is only commposed with veteran Space Marines from other chapters. It is a great honour to be chosen and they only take the elite and mot experienced Space Marines.

They are the last ressort of the inquisition when they need firepower against greater foes/menaces.

So no, they are not only loosers there to cover mistakes.

IIRC from the lore none are sent to the deathwatch as punishment. There are 2 (maybe 3?) ways a warrior can end up in the deathwatch. Most common is to have some veterans of a chapter sent as a sort of tithe to the Ordo Xenos. These warriors are highly honored and go willingly to slay aliens. They compose the majority of Kill Teams (the Spec OPs of 40k). Another is if a warrior feels they have lost their honor in some form or another. This is most often a self imposed exile of sorts and these are the warriors that become Blackshields, like Titus in the campaign. Blackshields no longer carry any of their former chapters markings and most often seek death in glorious combat. Fate just happened to reunite Titus with his old chapter allowing him to become an Ultramarine again.

Deathwatch service is seen as a great honor. As for Blackshields, they have a meeting with a Watch Master to petition entrance to the Deathwatch. I highly doubt a Watch Master would take on a 'dreg' or 'loser'.

Couldn't be further from the truth. The Deathwatch are the best Anti-Xenos Specialists/Veterans from all sorts of Chapters united in one to deal with Xenos Threats; its an great honour to be part of it and thus also great way to restore your Honour which is why Titus was part of it to restore his Honour, remove allegations and the likes through Service under the Inquisition afaik

Alongside being either part of an Crusading Chapter, some mysterious Dark Angelresque secretive Chapter or an OG Chapter its probably the coolest thing you can be part of as a Space Marine

If you are really good at what you do, but don't get along with your brothers, You get to be send to Deathwatch. Or if you consider yourself shamed and chose to repent you go to Deathwatch. You can also kinda appear at the fortress gates with no markings clad in completely black armor, you will get accepted as Black Shield if you get deemed trustable enough

Don't think that this makes Deathwatch weak, only veterans are welcomed there and they become even more battle hardened while serving.

There are moments where marines genially send there as a way to reward their exceptional service. But you always need to ask yourself, why chapter decided to send them there, instead of assigning position withing chapter command......

Totally not that.

The inquisition sometime can be confronted against terrible menaces that cant be dealt with theyr own froces. So they need something more, thus the creation of the deatchwatch. But because these missions are higlty brutal and very deadly, they need the best of the best of the best. So they take veteran space marines, talentuous and experimented space marines.
And because the deathwatch is a last resort against overpowerd menaces, the deathwatch know they will not allways come back from theyr services.

It basicly is the movie expendable.
We need a group of badass for the most dangerous and sometime scuicidle mission because only them can help the inquisition.

lets say i am Vang
Blood Angel / Death Berserk

as far as i know if you go death watch you cancel your past connection to Blood Angels etc

i wanted to make black+death watch shoulder with red cross on knees ... but there is no red cross symbol

When you integrate the deathwatch, you equipe a black armor, color of the death watch, but one of your shoulder plate keep the color and symbol of your original chapter. I think you also take a new name for the time of your service in the deathwatch.

anyway feels odd that Titus had Death Watch as punishment in game...not explained...
