I've gotten about 80 hours of fun out of it and I'm not done yet. Campaign is about 8ish hours long, depending on how much wandering around and dying you do.
The real core of the game is PVE Operations, which are very fun and can be compared to Vermintide/Darktide/Helldivers to an extent.
PVP is fairly fun, but very bare bones. It could use some serious love from the devs.
The hype dying down is merely because it isn't a live service game, so content is on a very slow drip. People played for dozens/hundreds of hours and are now done. That doesn't necessarily mean the game is bad/dead.
Great game, worth the buy, but I'm off Hell Diving as thats on sale.
Elden Ring lost a similar % of players a couple months after launch. Was elden ring worth buying?
Combat is intuitive, but It's not challenging, and it could've been a lot better if they smoothed out transitioning between attacks / combos.
Allowing proper cancels to make you do whatever you want dash / parry cancels sounds like fun.
Gunplay is mediocre and all most guns feel samey. Astartes Mod keeps the game semi-interesting, but devs are gatekeeping the modding community of an already dwindling player base game.
Better to take notes and make proper balance patches.
You have 3 basic game modes: short PvE Campaign (6 missions) which feels more like a tutorial. Then - Eternal War (PvP), which is not everybody's kettle of fish as it is probably best played with friends instead of random dudes who just happen to have some spare time.
Operations (PvE) which can be played with friends or with AI bots agins the AI.
And here is where it fails.
Simply speaking - the lowest difficulty level in Campaign mode is just that - easy.
In Operations, though, you hit a brick wall even on the lowest difficulty. That's where people start dropping out of the game - because the alternative is to first get some serious skills to even think of achieving victory in any of the missions - which is a prerequisite for equipment upgrades and perks.
The graphics and detail is fine, some clumsy interface (like some combos require up to 4 key strokes) etc.
Operations could be the mainstay of the game for people who a) don't like PvP b)don't have friends to play with c)have limited time for playing.
But - the idiotic decision to bump up the entry level difficulty in Operations to the point where most players just leave the game - because there is nothing left for them.
The whole financial success of the game (over 5 million copies sold) was based on the hype created prior to release, and the only people left (admittedly highly skilled and dedicated players) are those who apparently have no much in the way of other commitments and love challenge for the sake of the challenge itself.
Well - most of the players pay and play the games for fun - a fact the creators of SM2 either are oblivious to, or deliberately choose to ignore it.
After all - a sols game is a sold game, and who cares what happens next...
For those who just want to have some fun without grinding the skills to a very high level - there are mods which make the game much more playable and enjoyable.
Its still worth the amount of time i spent to reach this point though. If you have nothing against repetition of the same 7 levels, which you most likely wont all play anyway, then its pure fun. The gameplay is great and so satisfying.
The campaign while short depending on how fast you go through it(6-10hrs) is done really well. It's a pretty good almost cinematic experience. It's even better if you have a friend or two to play with. I beat it once solo and then again with friends on a harder level so campaign alone I probably have invested about 20hrs or more in.
It has pvp if you are in to that, but does not seem like they give it much love compared to the rest of the game. It's there though at least so that's something.
It has operation missions you run that tie into the various levels and objectives during the campaign. These missions are setup like a Darktide game or Vermintide. They can be run solo or with other players(I'd advise queuing up to play with randoms because the solo bots in the game are not great in many ways).
I enjoy the combat immensely in this game and the gameplay loop. I like running the operation missions with randoms and grouping up with friends and killing tyranids by the hundreds.
I am fast approaching 400hrs in this game and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
this game is a success by every measure.
The devs are the problem with this title.
The first odd decision is in the way you survive. Instead of just having a health bar and fighting enemies to stay alive, or relying on drops to get healed, the main mechanic is having armor stacks that are replenished when you perform slow cinematic executions on mobs (which also make you invulnerable, allowing you to time them to cheese other mechanics). Not only is this cumbersome, it also leads to situations where killing a mob is bad. If you kill them without performing an execution everyone was denied a point of armor, and if you execute them yourself someone else might have been counting on that execution to stay alive.
The second odd decision is about dodging and parrying: The idea of counter attacking after avoiding an attack is nice, but those counter attacks are cinematic as well and don't make you invulnerable, meaning if there are a lot of mobs you will get wrecked during the animation.
The third odd decisions and I'll just call this one a bad decision, is that some enemies are just annoying. Some common mobs teleport around and kick you or shotgun you for a lot of damage, and now they have added cartoony enemies flying around on hoverboards that throw spears at you that are bullet sponges. These were added last patch and to me they double (maybe even triple) down on the reasons a lot of people were complaining about chaos forces.
Most matches are for tyranid maps, as people seem to avoid fighting Chaos. It was already harder to fight them, but it keeps getting more annoying as well. Most of the maps with special gimmicks at the end are Chaos too.
I hope they re-evaluate at some point, as this is clearly a solid shooter with some melee combat but they keep trying to focus it more into a cinematic experience with combo mechanics.
