OK...finally some sensible comment :)
Actually - I deleted my scathing review of the game and posted a new one.
In fact - I like the game - what pisses me off is the idiotic decision regarding the difficulty levels.
Compare Campaign on the lowest setting and Operations solo (with AI bots) - also on the lowest setting. Operations feels like 2 or 3 levels up.
Currently I am playing the game with the Primarch Power Fantasy mod. Very overpowered - but I couldn't find anything a bit more moderate. Later on - I will try the game w/o the mod.
Having said that - this is how the lowest difficulty level should look like. I am sure that many more people would be playing still.
The game may still be selling - but it feels more like a rip-off of the unsuspecting players who purchase the game based on the hype reviews - only to find out that they will never see the goodies because the entry point is too high for the vast majority.
I guess this is a new paradigm in the gaming industry:
I compare the situation you describe like my experience with Sekiro. I have played and beaten so many of the souls games and souls type games. I love them. I love the challenge. My friend played Sekiro and told me how awesome it was. I bought it. I loved the graphics, the setting the game took place in, the sound was good, the controls felt good. Problem was the mechanics the game was asking me to do I could just not do. Specifically the combat revolving around being able to parry consistently. I failed and failed and failed. Eventually I gave up. Liked the game, wanted to play the game, couldn't master the mechanic so had to give it up. Maybe one day I will go back and give it another shot.
Well...yes.
Regarding SM2 - I had another look at https://steamdb.info/app/2183900/charts/
If you integrate the diagram (since launch of the game till today) and assuming 5 million copies sold - that gives an average playing time of less than 8 hrs per player.
Doomed...or not doomed...this tells me something...
While I think the difficulty does need to be heavily rebalanced, I personally don't really care that much about the game being as difficulty as it is (even if I think it is stupidly so). My issue is that I hate having progression tied to it. Specifically, unlocking new weapon tiers. To have their bits locked behind such barriers is dumb. I can play the game as much as I want on the difficulty that I feel is not only the most comfortable for me, but also the most fun but eh, screw your weapon progression. No new shiny weapons for you unless you want to slam your head into a wall repeatedly and slog through a bad time. Unbind the weapon progression from the difficulty I could careless how hard the damn game is.
For the record I do by in large, enjoy the game and think it has solid game play, but I'll be damned if it doesn't make it really hard to have fun sometimes when I want to "get something done" and I don't have the time nor do I give a damn about "git gud" since I prioritize having fun over frustrating myself trying to practice with the limited time I have to do so.
Try without buddy then, up to ruthless it is not uncommon to find 2 random brothers who will drag you through the finish line unless you make them kick you by afking.
What a solution... play the game I bought to play with my friends without my friends...
Go to Nexus - download Primarch Power Fantasy mod.
It is WAAAY overpowered - but then you can play on higher difficulties too.
Worth giving it a go if (like most players) you don't have unlimited time to "git guD" and just want to have fun, upgrade weapons etc.
But what can i say, only approve it all.
So yeah, exceptional case - exceptional solution.
Or if you only play with premades - get a mod as it was suggested.
