The Update wasn't enough
Put in 125 hours now, all just PVE operations. I had a blast unlocking everything, sort of anyways. Kind of just realized it's over, bit of a doomer take.

The update wasn't enough, the pop went up from the usual 4K-6k Daily on steam, to around 13K a day now. That'll drop back down to the usual we had before the update, won't even take 3 weeks I bet.

Once it's down, they'll still need to finish the horde mode any whatever else, maybe it'll be a few months, maybe when the summer is over at the latest. That'll be the last major content update, that's it, the low population and low income of the game is not enough to justify them making big updates after the horde mode. They simply ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, trying to have a live service model despite them drip feeding content, delivering on features that we needed at launch or very soon after launch.

So yeah, they could deliver a giant update, much larger than what we just got, and this game would still be left behind by the devs. I don't know if they plan on making a story expansion, a sequel or spin off, but they will definitely not bother updating this game unless the average population is over 10K at the lowest. Across all consoles and steam I think it's probably over 20K all together, maybe hitting 30K at max, that's a generous guess honestly.

Before the update it was probably lower than 15K all platforms combined, maybe I'm wildly wrong. The update did not incorporate enough for me to continue playing. I'll admit I probably tired myself out, playing a few matches everyday or every other day, but that was my cycle for a while. I think the point is that the majority of anyone sticking around probably thinks they could have made the PVE mode better, which currently has the majority of their playerbase sticking around in.

To me, Chaos in this game was a major mistake, I think focusing solely on the Tyrinids was a better idea, and I think it shows. They split their resources and ended up making an overall fun but challenging faction to fight, that has issues but is the most popular to fight. Then they made chaos, the less popular and overall least balanced and fun to fight on some objective level.

Seems like a skeleton crew is developing the current updates, they can't even stick to their barebone promises, this update made that clear. I don't entirely blame them, I blame their leaders, and I am just gonna move on, as many will in the coming weeks, and then months. I wish things could have been different, the combat loop was addicting for a time, regardless of progression systems and mission variety. Small peeve, but as I mentioned they should have had the data vault in at launch, I didn't like seeing that I was now reverted to less than half PVE mode completion, when I should probably be at 80% or more by now, that was a nail in my own coffin.

Your take may be correct, but did it require the assistance of HERESY?

Doesn't really seem like you have a question or anything or need help with anything just more or less venting.

Well we're here for you. You are heard. We good now?

This game isn't meant to be a live service. The Devs have said it themselves. Drop in and play when you miss the game or want to try the new stuff, then move on.
I wish Steam would just kill player number counts at this point.

This was never supposed to be a live service game. You know how many people play Candy Crush? Why are you playing this and not that?

they'd have made a ton of money if they gave us firstborn weapons and armour.

but instead they want to give us CS:GO weapon skins & PRIMARIS ULTRAMARINE cosmetics.
so out of touch.

Its kinda sad when you realize that Vermintide 2 even after all those years have new campaign maps no matter of how much players play that game.

I guess I don't see the issue. You yourself said you had a blast. This isn't a forever game, live service title. You can just put it down. You don't have to only stick with this. 120 hours is a lot of time for a game that has a very simple gear grind to it. There's no killing 40 Swarmlords to hope the bolter you need with the right roll drops, it's all there for the taking. Other than that, maybe just not worry about population numbers so much. game takes 3 people to get a match started and you're worried about the numbers on steam being around 4k-6k? Not even counting the console or EGS players either?

There is no carrot to hunt for. It's a complete game with no fomo, that's why online isn't huge. Because anyone can play this game at any given moment and get what they want.

Except for the poor people who bought it at launch, who have to wait a whole year for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horde mode

.

This is the common misconception - who told you SM2 is a live service game ? It's only in your head, this is how you wanna see it. SM2 is what it is - a pretty looking shooter with a nice story (campaign) and some additional bonuses in the form of pve and pvp content. The population drop doesn't matter, the game's goal was to earn good money and it did - 5 mil players bought it, it was more than Saber had expected. People played the campaign, had some fun with operations and moved on - nothing unusual about it, just like in case of any other non live service game. Some are still enjoying pve and pvp and most probably will for months to come, at least in case of pvp since it actually is a kind of eternal mode (Eternal War). That's it, love it or hate it.

as someone who bought the game about 2-3 weeks after launch I can tell you I was more concerned at the time about getting the game to actually run consistently, and getting it to actually give me weapon exp. people experiencing technical issues (and there were a lot of us) were too busy trying to play the game we paid for to be too worried about horde mode.

technical difficulties aside (I never had that many personally aside from the occaisonal disconnect) the main issue with the game is lack of content. The fact that the game launched in such a poor technical state that it obfuscated this lack of content is the only reason people were more vocal about connection issues and the like.

Because we all love WH40k and the graphics are good people are pretending the game is waay better than it is. This has potential - this COULD have been a game even more fun than helldivers given the universe they are set in :P

But nah - they make it clear they don't intend on investing much in projects and will rely on controversy and building parasocial fan loyalty to skate through. I agree with the dev that not all games need to be advant garde...but I also feel striving for SOME innovation is also warranted - this feels like they really wanted fresh aliesn and re-skin of the first game in modern engine.
