What am i supposed to do with sniper in pve?
I started out trying the class and loving it. was one shot headshotting warriors and having a great time. I went up to the next difficulty when I got better gear, and it takes multiple shots to the head to kill. Ive upgraded more now, im onto tier 3 weapons, I have all the "headshot damage" perks, and on difficulty 3 its taking me 3+ headshots to kill anything. I am completely useless. I am looking at what I can get to do more, but theres nothing thats gonna bring that 3 shots down to 1, and this is only difficulty 3!

Am i not meant to be targetting and taking out the strong monsters? What am i doing wrong

Everything works up to Substantial, but Relic weapons are the ones that give you the power fantasy of one or two-shotting stuff with Las Fusil and Bolt Sniper. For Ruthless and Lethal its advised to stay with Las Fusil, its the most effective.

Even with headshot damage passives and Relic weapons on Substantial its still two shots to kill majoris with Bolt Sniper unless for some occurances where you are buffed by teammates and can one-shot Tyranid ranged majoris and Bolter CSM.

One-shotting is more of a Las Fusil thing, though.

I use the las fusil. I am on level 3 difficulty, with every headshot damage perk available. I am not on relic weapons yet, but i dont see how 1-2 extra points of damage turn these 3 shots into 1. I would be happy to stay on diff 4 and one shot headshot, but if i am 3 shot headshotting when almost fully upgraded, what the hell am i gonna be able to do on higher dificulties?

Im trying to break out of other classes (I only play assault, funny hammer) but just, none of them are any fun and none of them feel impactful. Sniper was the other class i enjoyed the most, but it seems to weak. I suck in melee, i suck in mid range, my only job is sniping the big guys and i cant even do that.

Believe me, the few points do matter. But you wont be able to consistently one-shot majoris on difficulty 4 and 5, cant even do that on difficulty 3 with a Relic Las Fusil. Depends on the majoris though.

Your main damage happens with spamming cloak through cooldown reduction with headshot kills and the passive that gives your first ranged shot in cloack +75% damage. But again, you wont be one-shotting much but you can definetly two-shot.

You will soon realize, its not about one-shotting stuff but getting majoris into execute range with one shot.

Just a note to good advice already stated the bolt sniper is a viable alternative to las fusil, even better in some regards. It has the same headshot multiplier now as las fusil and more ammo. If you take the weapon perk reloaded restoration you also get ammo back every reload just by hitting enemies. Don't even have to kill them. Las fusil you would need to kill at least two enemies with one shot to have the round refunded.

Agreed on this, when I played my sniper class, I stayed with the bolt sniper rifle, and prefer it over Las fusil.

Dude I 2 shot them on ruthless and 3 on lethal what are you talking about

I think it comes down to preference. Bolt sniper rifle is a more traditional sniper weapon now that it is improved and is less likely to be blocked by hanging vines and handrails.

The las fusile has less ammo but is much better against a variety of enemies, especially hordes where you can blast away and get a lot more mileage for a lot less ammo.
End game sniper class is setup for a Camo/headshot kill cycle. With perks set properly your camo give a big ol dmg boost to head shots which lets ya plow thru stuff on lethal or ruthless with the bolt sniper or the las fusil even tho i do like the fusil the best.

So ya should be using cloak. headshot 2 or 3 warriors before camo leaves which will refill cloak cooldown. repeat.

As with any other class, wait untill you get to lvl 25 and relic tier weapons with all perks unlocked, to see its true potential. Max lvl Sniper is amazing even on Lethal difficulty.

Do not be upset about not oneshotting majoris for now. Even if you deal 40% dmg to his hp in one shot, its still a big help to your team, since that enemy is almost half dead already with little effort. Best builds on max difficulty allow to oneshot with some help from your team mates, but on your own, best you can expect is 1-2 shots to put enemy in finisher state, and honestly its more than fine.

So keep targeting the toughest enemies, that's what is your role as a Sniper. Just lay off the expectations of oneshotting.

Versus Tyranids: Focus on Snipers, otherwise conserve ammo of the Main Gun for Extremis.
Versus Thousand Sons: Snipe Flamer enemies and otherwise conserve ammo of Main Gun for Extremis.

Don't "execute" enemies with your Primary, unless nobody is going for the execute in melee.

Other than that, use your pistol to snipe ranged Chaff (Termagants and Human Cultists)

Personally, I just run a hybird build.
Where I can cloak to do +100% with the charged knife attack when I don't feel like wasting ammo, it's usually a one shot for majoris if you charged like 2 secs, and the cloak come back the instant you finish your execution animation so you can keep looping it.

(or don't and you can just cloak then swing immediately to get the 2 secs of free cloak that is usually long enough for your cloak to be ready again, allowing you to do near perma cloak in melee. This will allow you to take the +75% range damage perk instead to play more "snipery")

The main take away for sniper is...don't hide with the cloak for too long.
Use it then break it as soon as possible, so that you can be perma cloaked with the "2 extra second of cloak after breaking cloak" perk, otherwise you will need to waste your time chain headshoting trash to reset your cloak instead of focusing on the big boy.

But if you want the 1 shot 1 kill fantasy then you will have to bring your relic gun down to Substantial, any diff higher than that usually just put them to "downed" state.

Yes in general you should be setting up more executions for your brothers, than you are taking.

This generally goes for all ranged classes, but sniper is the specialist in setting up those executions in one (or very few) shot(s).

Keep setting up any of your melee brothers with free executions, and they will love you for it.

Sniper has two ways actually:

-Long range, as others said - that is the way of making enemies red and glowing

-Melee, sniper 2-3 taps ranged majories on ruthless (did not test exact number on lethal, but it is roughly the same). Double points if you have vanguard with you, then you have the lictor-mode on.
