I personally prefer the heavy bolt rifle. It sounds good, it feels good, and it can tear the swarms of minoris apart pretty easily if they're clumped up. If you invest in accuracy and/or reduced recoil, it will score head shots extremely consistently, which lets it incapacitate at least two majoris enemies per clip if your weapon is the same quality as the mission difficulty.
The only one I'd say to avoid is the auto bolter rifle. It seems to be pretty bad in general. It shoots too fast to be accurate, and it eats through ammo without seeming to accomplish much.
The Grenades only come online around Purple Grade... you'll not have a really great gun while playing grey through green.
You can quite often launch a bunch of grenades into a pack of minoris and majoris enemies, wiping out the minoris and stunning the majoris, run up and execute a majoris and have full ammo again for the next pack. What's not to like?
The heavy bolter is pretty good to but it's not as versatile as the one with the grenade launcher.
You haven't seen a Relic Grenade Launcher in action on Ruthless, have you?
You Auspex a bunch of Warriors, then pepper them with triple damage grenades. Any grenades you spend killing the first one are immediately refunded, allowing you to kill even more enemies. That same combo is also incredibly effective against bosses. I've killedd Carnifexes frighteningly quickly with it.
But I agree that the Heavy Bolt Rifle is very satisfying to use, and that the Auto Bolt Rifle is kind of naff. It doesn't have enough variants, thus not enough perks, and it doesn't do anything particularly special.
Bolt rifle with grenade launcher is also meta, if they fix the infinite grenade loop it will be sad but still usable. Heavy bolt rifle is okay vs swarms, very weak vs majoris and up. Auto bolt rifle and smg bolt carbine are virtually useless, the only time they feel """alright""" is if you're being chased by a swarm and you're hip firing into it.
Bolt rifle without grenade launcher and marksman bolt carbine are quite similar, the bolt carbine is a fair bit better at keeping repeated shots on target but has less damage and struggles even more vs hordes. Their ttk vs majoris/extremis is actually decent, but they deal no stagger whatsoever.
Stalker bolter is the best by far and genuinely decent. It has less dps than lasfusil on sniper but tactical can make good use of it if you want a sniper type weapon on that class. Tactical also completely fixes its ammo issues, you can spam shots freely with the relic ammo variant and all relevant ammo perks. The dps is still alright and you will shred through majoris enemies and even punch big holes into hordes with repeated shots. The most annoying thing about the weapon is the severe recoil that does not reset after firing so you have to constantly fight the weapon to stay on target.

if you don't wanna read all that there's a useful comparison of how many headshots it takes to disable a warrior on ruthless at the bottom
almost as good as melta, prolly second best gun in the game
goes in the same tier as las for sure
