Loin cloth?
With all of the armor this "Marine" is wearing, a loincloth seems a little weird, perhaps an oversize cod piece would work better?

Simple... They're Roman inspired, Roman did wear loincloth. Or more exactly, they wear subligaculum wich is quite similar.

And it's fancy.

Why do you see clone troopers across star wars clone wars media wearing skirts/Kamas? Because they look cool. Rule of cool is the only rule for me.

If you are asking why a space marine would have a loin cloth as an armor adornment, then I must assume you know very little about warhammer

If you are replying with nothing while pretending to know a lot, then I must assume you know about as much as OP.

Loincloth makes 0 sense defensively and rags we get in early tiers are difficult to call decorative. I assume there's some pseudo-religious meaning to them, because otherwise they would be as pretentious as the person I'm replying to.

To be fair, if we are going with a real life perspective to this then the armor doesnt make sense at all, because those shoulderpats are way too big to cover something that doesnt need that much cover to begin with.

In regard to the clothes, its somewhat of the same reason why Space Marines run around in flashy colours instead of camouflage. The colour of the armor is there to instill fear into the enemies, its there to show that Space Marines dont give a damn if you see them, because you are going to have a bad time. Clothes and other stuff hanging from the armor is mainly used to show prestige amongst the fellow brethren.

Come to think of it, colors feel like their main purpose is to differentiate the different chapters. Loin cloth could also be an attribute seeing how some do have that little something.

As someone who can and does appreciate a proper Latin word here and there, not gonna lie:

"Subligaculum" sounds kinda dirty.
And it doesn't help that it's not only used for the loincloth but also for a bikini banana hammock kind of thing.

And now I need to get rid of the mental image of showering space marines putting those on.

"Is that your primaris scar or the strap of your subligaculum, brother?"
