A Little Bit of Warhammer Lore: Black Shields – On the Edge of Glory and Oblivion
Black Shields. A name that carries with it shadows and mystery, even among the ranks of the Emperor's finest. You ask about them? Then know this: they are brothers... yet not brothers. Sons of the Emperor, yet without a home, without the sigils of their lineage to mark their place in His service. Their armor is as dark as the void itself, its heraldry erased—stripped of all meaning except one: duty.

But do not mistake the absence of chapter markings for weakness or betrayal. No. To be a Black Shield is to bear a burden heavier than any chapter banner, for they carry the weight of secrets unknown, of oaths unspoken. Each one of them, a warrior adrift, cast out or self-exiled, severed from the ties that bind us to our lineage, our primarchs. The why of it is never shared, only the what: war. Endless, ceaseless war.

Some say they are cowards, traitors fleeing judgment. But if you have stood beside them in the fire of battle, if you have witnessed the fury with which they fight, you would know otherwise. These are Astartes who have chosen to walk the hardest path, to strip themselves of identity and offer up their lives in service to a cause greater than themselves.

Where they hail from, I do not know. None do. Some were once my brothers in arms, perhaps. They could have worn the colors of Ultramar, or the white of Fenris, or even the dread black and gold of the Sons of Horus before they fell. It does not matter now. For once they don that nameless void of armor, they become something else—something that transcends our usual bonds of loyalty and brotherhood.

The Deathwatch accepts them, but even there, they stand apart. They do not speak of their past, not to their new battle-brothers, not even to the Watch Commander. They are given the sacred right to serve, not as a chapter’s emissary, but as a solitary force against the alien, the heretic, and the traitor. Some say they seek redemption, others revenge. I care not. What I know is this: they fight like those who have nothing left to lose, and that makes them dangerous.

We call them Black Shields, but there are no shields among them. No protection from their past, no safety from the battles they throw themselves into. Only the black, the void, the endless battle.

They are lost brothers. Forgotten, perhaps, but never gone.
