*The Salamanders basically saved humanity from the Beast. They're very commendable.
they are not pragmatic, so they dont care if 1 astartes > 1 human
i like them quite a bit
The setting may not wink at the audience like it used to, but the setting is still meant to be stupid.
I will also preface this with the knowledge that before finding Vulkan, the Salamanders where suicidal in their protection of the innocent or their task. this is why they were never a large legion.
After Finding Vulkan their primal rage which rivalled that of the world eaters was tempered ( ;) ) And they began to carefully select where and when they enter that point of no return.
However this is all noise. the real value of the Salamanders is in their humanity, Vulkan let them keep their ties to their families because he knew that they needed a reason to stay alive, and a reason to die,
This gives the Salamanders a grounded character far beyond that of other Legions / Chapters. This too is represented in their traditions, lowering their dead into larva. The Burning walk, the Trials of Vulkan, The Tome of Fire, The skill of black smiting. the Ritual scaring of their flesh. Each and every part of it is formed from a full bodied sense of justice. of Nobility, Of Self sacrifice.
Vulkan specifically used the wisdom given to him by his father ( His proper father ) to create a creed to give the salamanders the proper judgement they needed to survive in a cruel world. think of him more like a poet king than a philosopher.
Long story short, the Salamanders are the best boi's.
THERE ARE NO GOOD GUYS!
One of the angels valued " THEM " In this universe that's a powerful thing.
There's a bit of confusion though and I blame most of the modern 40k media. They're most in touch with their humanity yes, but humanity aren't "good" in this universe. No one is ( ♥♥♥♥ off Tau you suck ) to me the Salamanders are representative of the slivers of hope you see in this universe so that the grim-darkness of the future doesn't become desensitizing. You need little glimmers to avoid the dark stuff losing its effectiveness. Therefore, one could say they're one of the keystone pieces holding up the universe's dark tones.
Not the Tau though, Tau can jump off a cliff.
Very good analysis
