Why do people like bulwark so much?
I got it to level 16, still do not understand why it is so popular.

Bulwark is basically a combat medic one you hit, IIRC, Level 23. You can get a perk that causes your banner to fully restore everyone's contested health if they're inside its radius, so drop it down when your team is executing something and they'll get a full heal. It's one of the few ways to recover HP in this game, so naturally it's popular.

Bulwark has the same issue Assault does though where you want to run Fencing type weapons so you can get your parries off more reliably, but the Artificer (Purple tier) Fencing weapons all suck ass thanks to their low Speed stat. Once you get the Relic (Orange tier) Fencing weapon, it's insanely good.

Yeah i switched back to a green rarity sword after 2 missions due to how slow it was. Though i'm using a block type sword personally, still switched back to green rarity though.

I actually kinda appreciate the Artificer Fencing Power Sword. Taught me how to truly master the parrying system, and to appreciate the sword styles and switching them mid-combat.
The Artificer Fencing PS definitely isn't the worst offender. I'm leveling Assault right now and the Artificer Fencing Thunder Hammer is physically painful with it's Speed of 0. But the difference between it and the Master Crafted or Relic Fencing PS is night and day. Especially when you have to interrupt a melee combo to dodge an Unparryable attack. The entire point of the Fencing weapons is to have easier parries, and I genuinely find the Balanced Artificer weapons easier to use just because they screw my my muscle memory less.

i don't like it, for some reason parry never seems to work when i use it, i get one hit and over half of my health is gone, then you're scrambling to get a stun so you can win back your contested health, 9/10 i fail and i'm left with practically no health. i just can't figure out the system, seems different from the other classes.

Ah, there's your problem! Block weapons are bad, especially on Bulwark, since the best way of dealing with Majoris and higher enemies is parrying, not attacking. A lot of Bulwark's best perks also require you to get perfect parries, so I heavily recommend getting a Fencing weapon and learning the parry system.
has the coolest armor schemes and the strongest ability imo

Vanguard with melta does that way better than Bulwark. Instant transportation to your ally and instant melta clearing. Also vanguard actually tanks way better due to +50% parry window perk, and he also heals up 10% per melee exec. I’m not a Bulwark main but I think Bulwark deserves some form of AoE taunt to shine. Healing allies with flag is awesome but it’s the sort of power I would expect of an apothecary, not a bulwark.

Imo Vanguard seems to fill more of an assassin type role due to well, all the reasons you listed. Bulwark handles hordes pretty dang well, acts as a living chokepoint thanks to the stun ability (which I believe increases dmg enemies take by 25%), the fencing style yellow gear nullifies brings it in par to a 50% party window imo, then add in how Bulwark drops a stun grenade upon a successful parry every like, sixty seconds. Mixed with being able to drop one when armor is depleted.

But I do agree, a taunt would be really nice

I don’t know, my vanguard does act like a living chokepoint and clears way faster than any bulwark can dream to, since melta is -that- broken. Fencing knife+parry perk = you can just spam your parry shortcut and solo hold 7 warriors + a horde. I don’t pick up stims anymore in ruthless, never really need them. Even if you get hit for 70% of your lifebar, shoot your melta into anything to get it all back.
As for assassinating, the hook is crazy indeed, but somehow, the tank is better at dealing with long range majoris due to how plasma pistol works. Plasma pistol is better than the Vanguard’s primary "sniper" at taking them down. The class design is just... messy.

My only complaint as to why it's so popular is the fact that I can only play it sometimes in co-op. Other than that, if you know how to perfect parry 100% of the time, you can pretty much solo a swarm of minoris and majoris enemies. Last night, I was playing Inferno on Ruthless and was swarmed by 30+ tyranid minoris and 4-5 warriors simultaneously. Although I was near death, it was thanks to the flag skill that I was able to live and regain momentum. It was by the end of the bloody confrontation that my teammates caught up with me.

Same here, I think the only time I've picked up stims is when my teammates are both maxxed out on health and stims and we're moving into a new area. I don't kill the quickest, but I at least attract a good amount of attention and can endure through the worst of it with ease, and should I go down in health I can deploy the banner and get a quick execution in.

Oh yeah, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love the plasma pistol for handling the alerts and taking some health off a mini boss/event enemy.

With assassination, I primarily refer to targets that are either attacking allies such as warriors, lictors, or raveners. Vanguard excels at targeting those while the Bulwark keeps a horde around them

It's the step-dodge. The powersword is very nice too. But mainly it's the step-dodge.
