That might be a big of rose tinted goggles, because a lot of friendly AI in earlier games were programmed to just follow simple orders and then shoot / attack with a certain degree of accuracy or set damage.
In a game like SM2, the AI is probably not easy to program because the AI has to figure out priorities as a ton of different scenarios will change every couple of seconds. Does it hold it's special attack for potential future problems, or use it now when things look kind of tough? Does it try to head off the elites rushing you, or does it try to think the swarm of minor enemies? Does it rez you because you just went down, or does it back up your friend who is getting swarmed because if they go down, the run ends?
Even Conker's Bad Fur Day 2005 the multiplayer bot teammates outshine this game in every way to a shocking degree.
I can go back and play tons of old game's from the early 2000s and the Ai bots actually were smart enough to follow work wit you do objects and fight while here your lucky you Bot decides to use it's gun for things 20feet away.
And it's not rose tinted glasses because I've been playing these old game's these past years because modern game's are a hit or miss the majority of my gameing is old game's and emulation of old game's.
The only thing the bots are good at in this game is reviving you and using melee for things that are in there face that's it.
