How is melee combat?
Is there any complexity to it, or do you just mash the attack button? Can you block with power shields or gloves, parry with force swords, is there variety and depth? Thanks.

It's not too bad, feels a bit clunky at times and at other times you feel unstoppable. There are 4 melee weapons each with their own variety of attacks/combos. You can use both light and heavy attacks or combo them together for more unique moves that are beneficial in certain situations. There is block and also parrying, you get small hints of incoming attacks and that can be blocked or not and if you time a parry or dodge correctly you can counter attack. It's not super in depth but also not just button mash and succeed.

Each weapon has combos. In Operations, you also have access to unlocking new variants of said weapons. Some of the melee weapons have different defense features.

They are as follows:

Balance: Has a short timing window for parrying. An unsuccessful parry within the window will result in a block. A failed parry will result in taking a beating.
Blocking: Incapable of parrying. Only blocking.
Fencing: Has a significantly better timing window for parrying with a better wind down animation iirc, allowing for faster recovery.

Melee is good, but the game throw wayyyy to many range enemies at you, if your team don't have someone dedicated to clearing out range enemies, have fun fighting in melee while being shoot in the back. So many time i'm in a dancing duel with Warriors and i have to break combat just to chase after range enemies it is so annoying

only real correction is that there are actually 5 melee weapons (6 if you count the Heavy's unarmed fighting)

Chainswords
Power Swords
Power Fists
Thunder Hammers
and Combat Knives

It gets pretty complex in higher difficulties where even minoris enemies chunk your health. There are different combos that come out depending on delay between swings, when you go into a heavy, and how much cleaving potential stat a wepaon has (which changes its animations and moveset slightly.) Hopping around between melee swings adds a sort of flow/dance to combat, so you can complete the combo you want to do without getting bodied by a half dozen chafe leaping at you and instamelting your health. There is also parrying, which feels extremely satisfying to pull off.

It has no impact or precision. It feels like you're swinging through air and the timing for blocks and dodges is just off. Ranged is king.

Oh I wasn't aware power fists were a weapon, haven't play too many operations. Thanks for the correction!
