Honestly you can watch a youtube video that will bring you up to current events.
Though I will say that Space marine 1 is a better game.
and you feel more like a super power space marine in SM1.
That said... SM1 wasn't exactly an incredible story (and I'm not expecting this game to be much different). It is a typical Astartes story in the 40K universe. Bad [xenos/ demonic/ heretical] stuff happens. The Imperium comes to save the day. The audience is reminded that the Imperium are not the good guys (but neither is anyone else). Awesome weapons do awesome things, explosions, carnage, heck yeah Brother. Credits roll, and you remember why you liked 40k to begin with.
A few 40k stories break the mold. This isn't Eisenhorn, or Ciaphas Cain. If you want to play SM1, absolutely do so. If you want to jump right into SM2, so long as you have a rough idea of the 40k universe, you'll do just fine here (and even if you don't, this is as good a place as any to jump in).
