Developers Need To Add Female Characters
As a passionate female gamer who loves exploring a variety of games with my boyfriend, I can't help but feel excluded from the world of *Space Marine* and *Warhammer 40,000*. I know I’m not alone in this feeling, and I hope you’ll hear me out as I explain why this matters.

To start, the hyper-masculine culture around these games feels unwelcoming to many female players. The “dude bro” atmosphere can make it difficult for us to fully engage, creating an environment that often feels exclusionary. On top of that, the lack of female characters in these games sends a clear message: we’re not seen, we’re not represented, and we don’t belong in this universe.

When my boyfriend and I play games together—whether it’s an MMO or a classic RPG—one of the things we enjoy most is the chance to reflect our real-life dynamic in the game. In *World of Warcraft*, we love creating characters that represent us, exploring the world as a couple, going on in-game dates at a tavern or festival. Games like *Baldur’s Gate 3* offer us the freedom to fully immerse ourselves by choosing characters that match our personalities and play styles. In *Overwatch*, I enjoy playing Mercy to heal my boyfriend’s Reinhardt, a perfect example of how gaming can mirror real-life partnerships and allow for creative roleplay.

I’m not asking for *Space Marine* to exactly mimic these dynamics, but I do wonder why a similar game like *Gears 5* allows me to play as a female character, but *Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2* doesn’t offer the same choice. There’s no good reason why female players shouldn’t be able to play as a female space marine. Instead of being forced into the role of a bulky, hyper-masculine male character that many women can’t connect with, it would be empowering to see options for characters who are fierce, dynamic, and female.

Excluding female characters feels outdated in 2024, especially when there’s so much opportunity for games to evolve and be more inclusive. Catering only to a narrow audience of stereotypical “sweaty nerds” or “gym guys” limits the potential of these games. By opening up and including diverse characters and play styles, developers could attract a much broader audience and create a more vibrant, engaging community for all. It’s not just about representation—it’s about fostering a space where everyone feels seen, included, and excited to play.

They could even do that with the Warhammer Lore with the Adepta Sororitas Sisters of Battle

Gear's focuses on a story based around the COG versus the literal infestation and horrors of the Locust that plague the planet. You have a diverse cast because they are all that they are, humans.

W40K is also diverse, Space Marines are merely a group of a specific faction that was created by the Emperor himself, with the creation of his 20 Sons, and those Marines are seeded with the same but limited genetics of those 20 Sons to help form the 20 different chapter legions. Ultramarines being one, which YOU are playing as.

Sometimes lore is lore, and sometimes it makes more sense to keep it as it is instead of fixing something that isn't broken. If they wanted to include female representation, they'd include Battle Sisters in. But they didn't, that means the story is focused in locations with lack of Sororitas present. [Yes, you can have systems with NO Sororitas, or no Astartes. ] So that means none of them are available to deal with the Nid Swarm.

Another note, if we add a diversity branch into every, single hobby, into every single game, but we do not apply this to all the games related to Female Protagonists, then I find that hypocritical. Why can't I play as a man in Tomb Raider? Or in the new Last of Us instead of Ellie? Why? Because of the literal story presented.

Just gonna say it. READ THE LORE. The reason space marines are only male is their augments KILL 90% of men alone that are peak condition. While women die 100% of the time to these modifications. People need to seriously read into the 40k lore instead screaming and pissing themselves. It's explained hundreds of thousands of times. It's even mentioned in a recent book female space marines were tried by the emperor and it ended horribly and was a extreme waste of resources. Second you want to feel included then look into the Sisters of Battle and their various media depictions instead of screaming for lore breaking and extreme immersion breaking bs

If you can't be bro for your boyfriend, your relationship is totally garbage.

This is a game about Space Marines. They are only male.

If anything, petition for a game about the Adepta Sororitas military branch, also called Sisters of Battle, then you have female characters.

Besides, if you can't play a game, because the character is of the opposite sex, then that is a YOU problem. I never had that problem and could easily play games with female characters or even make female mains in RPG's that have character creation.

Also, when it comes to representation, I neither need it nor have ever felt it. Now, if they ever make a game about an introverted normal guy in his late 40s going to work every day, where he hates life more and more with the passing of each, then I might. But I am no Commander Shepard, I'm no Space Marine, I'm no Barret or Could or Bayonetta or Tifa or 2B. Yet I still enjoyed the games and could, if the story was told well, understand the motivation through the power of empathy or logical deduction.
