Crux Terminatus
Am I incorrect in thinking that the Crux Terminatus is only to be worn on the left pauldron (sometimes in combination with left kneepad)? I only see armor designs in the game where the Crux Terminatus is worn on the right pauldron.

Yes, I know this is nitpicky, but I have barely scratched the surface of Warhammer 40k lore and feel like this would have taken a half second's worth of research to get correct.

This may have answered my own question (as I am just thinking "out loud" here), but apparently members serving in the Deathwatch use their left pauldrons (as typical) for their Deathwatch heraldry while currently serving and thus may choose to wear the Terminator honors on their right pauldrons. Then, when finishing service in the Deathwatch and returning to their original Chapter they may wear their Deathwatch heraldry on their right pauldron to signify their service to their brothers and return the Terminator honors to their left.

Would they even wear one on regular Power Armor in the first place?
"Check it guys, I could be wearing our ancient chapter relic armor but I'm not, isn't that great?"

In-lore you only ever see veteran space marines wear the crux terminatus on their right shoulder, never on the left. That's only a sort of "terminator honors" so to speak. It's to show they have a set of termi armor set aside for them in the chapter's armory. They don't always wear it because, virtual indestructibility aside, it's simply not practical for regular use in the average operation.

My understanding is the relic that has a shard of big E's armor in it, is the tactical dreadnought armor i.e. terminator plate. Explains why some chapters have so few, why they're near impossible to make new, and why they're such valuable pieces of wargear.

As to why they don't wear them in the deathwatch, when you join the deathwatch you forfeit your honors until you complete your service. If you ever do.

Yes in lore anyone with terminator honors wears a crux terminatus to signify they have the honors, even if they aren't actively wearing the terminator armor. Sometimes terminator armor isn't practical to use and so they won't wear it always.

Most chapters have only a limited amount of Terminator armor, so its only used when really necessary and as others already said, it isnt always practical.

Terminator armors are priceless relics too valuable to risk unnecessary. If situation requires more versatility than toughness veterans would wear regular armor.

Terminator armors are extremely ancient and coveted. The Dark Angels, being the first legion, have more of these compared to all other OG chapters (same as with every other relic, GW please, F those primadonna). With each new founding, the new chapters in lore have lower and lower of these relics, so it's not something uncommon to have a large majority of the 1st company vets in power armor instead of terminator, especially if it's newer chapters.
