I thought it's a multiplayer season pass you progress through and level it up like any other game.

This is why "pass" is a crappy thing to use, especially now they have multiple different things called a pass now a days.
Yeah the season pass is mostly cosmetics for different chapters in the universe to customize your character with from what I understand. The other stuff in relation to modes, new weapons, and anything else new is supposedly free.....at the moment anyway.
There isn't anything in relation to leveling something up like a battle pass. You can level up the classes but that's just part of the base game. I'd recommend you check the store page for that information or type it up online in google perhaps so you can get a better idea what it all is prior to throwing down the cash.

Battle Pass are, like you said, the one where you have to progress through them to unlock stuff until the end of the season/whatever name they come up with. Good to give daily/weekly goals when players can't make it themselves but it's usually straight-up FOMO (unless it's done like Deep Rock Galactic)

Season Pass are just paid content unlocked every so often. You pay once per season and get everything in it without the risk of missing out.

Yeah. While you don't always know 100% what all might be in a season pass, you'll get everything that was originally promised for said season pass with that one payment. It's a bit of a gamble sometimes, but no FOMO.

It adds purely cosmetic items. If you care about the appearance of your Space Marine, then you should probably have one.

I currently have not bought it. I feel like the season pass is more for the die hard 40k people that want to fully kit out their chosen space marines similar to how they make the figures which is something I'd never personally be into in a table top setting.
I like cosmetics, but I get tired of them being needed to be paid for now a days over unlocks like in the older days. We shall see how much I like the game and go from there.
I'd only consider the pass if you genuinely care about cosmetic customization and have some kind of understanding of 40k and what all the cosmetics mean.
I don't have that full understanding so it might be a bit of a waste for me.

And you don't miss out, because 'season passes' tend to just be the 'paid DLC pack' that is always on the store.

Honestly, Blizzard has been calling their 'battle pass' the 'Season Pass' since they released Diablo 4; so that's really messing with everyone's perception of it(Diablo 4's 'season pass' is a 'battlepass' in that if you don't make it to the end, you don't get everything in it). Considering they also have 'battle passes' for Overwatch, etc you'd think they stick to the KNOWN nomenclature; but hey, gotta mess with the consumers. =\
