Some people see them as a good idea, others as the scourge of the modern gaming industry (I'm in between, honestly), for SM2? It's nothing like a normal battle pass though, instead it's a Season Pass (Basically you pay for all the DLC being released before they're released, or at least some of the DLC depending on how scummy the company is)
For this game, it's literally just additional skins you can unlock through the PvE COOP mode (Heraldry), the game already comes with a decent array of Chapters (Including the Blood Ravens, which made me happy) but the DLC just gives you even more options to grind for, so you can have more paint options for your Marines (Apparently it's only the Marines, and not the Chaos Marines which is a bummer, but I don't play PvP so doesn't effect me) since every paint option you unlock, is more customisation you get when making a custom chapter skin.
You'd have to buy the season pass in order to unlock them. The one edition that gives you the SP simply means you'll get the content in the next season for free. It's like most games that have the option to buy the extra Season Pass with DLC's. They'll be free for you, or people can buy them separately.
