PvP Melee is functionally useless
I've only played a couple games so far, and as far as I can tell, melee is currently a liability in PvP multiplayer. In the amount of time it takes you to kill someone with most melee weapons, you can just shoot the guy. Light attacks don't stop them from shooting, and heavy attack just make you vulnerable. The only "good" melee right now seems to be sticking the Assault Jump Pack Slam on a direct hit and blitzing a solo target.

Think Saber need to change how stagger works for melee at bare minimum, but personally think they need to increase melee damage overall + double check if parrying is working as intended.

Please note that i'm writing this without having enough time to unlock and test the Power Fist or the Thunder Hammer. This warning may be subject to change.

Nah mate. I've straight up bashed people two times with a Chainsword, and they just gun me down with a HBolter cause they don't flinch.

Melee is integral to the SM formula. If it doesn't work outside of two specific weapons limited to 1/2 classes, we got a significant problem.

Do you want the heavy to just be stun locked to death?
I said flinch, not stun lock. Just stops their firing period, and lose the RoF ramp up.

I get the concern, but again; making two classes functionally useless other than target practice if they can't even do their primary role. I'm just trying to offering solutions here.

uhh yes, this is a team based tactical shooter if the heavy is out of position and getting 1v1d you should just die. your fault. skill issue. melee should hard counter ranged as in you get staggered and cant shoot and are forced to fight in melee

why? because the guy that just got in melee with you was getting shot the entire time he ran up to you, it should be rewarding and competitive. Right now there is no point in trying to get into melee because even WHEN YOU DO, you will still get gunned down. Doesn't make sense. its dumb. needs to change

Even when you get into melee, parries don't reward you with much of anything. It seems to negate damage, sure, but it doesn't reward you with any of the follow-ups that a well-timed parry in the campaign does. IMO, it should be a rock-paper-scissors type deal: Parries beat lights, heavies beat parries, and lights beat heavies (on account of coming out faster/hitstun)

This is the way. Eternal Crusade did it right, just copy and paste

They solved this issue in the first game by making all the heavy weapons require a locked in stance to use their maximum potential. In the case of the HBolter, it would start firing faster and ramp up its RoF the longer you kept the trigger down.

The trade off? You were immobile while doing it. Granted, i don't think SM2 having them move a bit is that much, but it is annoying when I smack someone with a Thunder Hammer, and they just dump have a dozen HBolter or Bolt Sniper shots into my face.

The Assault Slam has a massive trade off now as you have to spend at least a second to aim and launch yourself into the enemy, while essentially wearing a giant "shoot here" sign, even if you're trying to do a quick jump.

Or how about Vanguards using their grapnel launcher, and legit getting a free stun, but if they go straight into melee, most classes can just shoot them faster than they can swing?

Again, one of the issues i think is contributing to this is that it feels like the guard/parry doesn't work when you are going into melee. It's not meant to mitigate damage like Bulwark, but i've witnessed several times (both inflicting and being on the receiving end) where i've seen melee attacks connect, despite parrying. It does feel like they may have rushed this aspect of the PvP.

yall babble on these forums more than play the actual game
Ninefinger Sep 5, 2024 @ 10:34pm
Yeah the PVP is why I really was hyped for the game but after playing a bit I realized just how bad the combat is and how plain the PVP is, its just a massive disappointment. Literally no fun skill based mechanics to play with at all.

PVP overall feels like it was added last minute to the point where i wonder why they even bothered with it.

Could've used that dev time to make an additional PVE map or two.
