Do I really need an SSD to play or will my HDD be fine
I looked up all the other requirements for the game, and my computer meets them or is better. The only problem is that I have an HDD, not an SSD. Would I still be good to play SM2?

I played Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield, two games that they insist cannot be played without an SSD, installed on an HDD and had zero problems playing them at max settings. SSD's are a marketing gimmick.

now i want to google a video comparing starfield loading screens on hdd and ssd.

but honestly, what's the price difference between a 1-2TB SSD and HDD these days? is there even one anymore?
Thats not the question. Your data storage does not have any impact on the games performance at all in 99.99% of the cases. Installing and loading is all it does, after that RAM, CPU and GPU are doing the work. So saying a game wont work on HDD is bs.

so what happens if the game loads stuff slower than your character moves?
Than your pc is from the 90s and should be upgraded immediately and the data storage is still the least of your concern. No game needs to write data continuously into the RAM, well not if the developers know what they are doing at least.

I've never had any issue running games that say they require an SSD on an HDD. It's just marketing BS.
Some games can deal with a HDD, some get crippled. Not every game handles data the same way.
A good example of this would be AC Valhalla, it is recommended to run it on an ssd but I can run it at the highest settings on an external HDD.

right.. upgrade every part of your pc except one. there aren't even pre-sata connectors for 90s HDDs on motherboards anymore.

You can make the case that the effects are exaggerated but it's still a massive improvement in most cases so picking up a new SSD for about the same price as a HDD is an easy choice.

A good 2TB NVMe M.2 is also ~150€/$ which is dirt cheap considering that it's going to fit a decent amount of games and last ~5 years for most people.
how is a system that literally lasts longer, has no moving parts to break, writes data and retrieves data faster... a marketing gimmic? and honestly this game may not actually need it idk. but my computer has two sata ssd's, two nvme ssd's and a hdd. even the sata ssd didnt run star wars outlaws but the nvme did just fine... the world and how games and things retrieve data is changing. the faster speeds will be important as developers expect that and write code accordingly

HDDs are thing of the past.

Does this massive difference in load times look like a gimmick to you?

maybe a few years ago. but it's a pretty safe bet all games being developed now assume you have an ssd, they have become that widespread/cheap.

you can get an ssd that fits 1-2 games for $25, and a 1TB one for under $100.

Stop lying, some people I know where dumb enough to install Starfield on HDDs and all had problems immediately after starting a game. Switched to SDDs and problems were gone.

I'm running starfield off an hdd with the Disk Cache Enabler mod. Im going to keep saying that the forced SSD requirement is a failure on the developers part not optimizing their games either because they dont know how to or their just lazy. Its nice to be able to load in faster but if a game like just cause 3/4, elden ring, ghost of tsushima, cyberpunk, etc. are able to run on hdd no problem, than why is it all of a sudden a problem now.
Brother, how are you still using an HDD in this year of Our Emperor 2024? I am not a hardware hoe but I've migrated to SSD more than a decade ago.

i don't know about you, but long load times break my immersion pretty hard.

why subject yourself to that when the solution isn't expensive?

Its cuz I'm in no rush, or have a short attention span. That and I grow up playing with loading screens. Like I said, its not bad to load in faster, thats not my problem, my problem is not being able to play my game on hdd because the devs either cant figure out how to optimize their game or they just cant be bothered with it, and trust me this is not the first time devs got lazy/didnt know how to optimize their game, its kind of the main reason why game files go above 100gb nowadays.
