so best way to get into 40k in general, for someone not familiar with lore or universe?
right so, someone who is not familiar with 40k, never played any games, and is definitely not able to afford to get into the tabletop games, what would be the best way for someone new to get into the universe? any video recommendations, other games, etc?

I'd recommend TTS to gain a loose understanding that has a nice visual aspect and gives you a reference point to do more research towards. If you're a fan of podcasts, I recommend Adeptus Ridiculous

what is TTS is exactly? normally i'd assume it would be "text to speech" but something tells me that's not what you might be referring to.

and as stupid as this sounds, I never really was into podcasts since I never really understood them or what they're for, or what they are exactly.

Go watch videos on utube, since this is Tyranid wars you can check those. Don't sweat about all lore since you won't be able to catch up, just do it in your own pace and one at a time. I spent at least more than 5 hrs watching lores and this Tyranid war is very engaging.

I even bought Krieg book :))

Apologies, If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device

I used to feel the same, but I've found they're nice to listen to while doing projects or driving to places

Watching lore vids isn't a bad idea, or you could just read some of the actual books that make up most of 40k's lore.

They're are literally hundreds of 40k novels but many are stand alone or come in self contained trilogies. Just pick something that looks interesting to you and start reading.

There’s a TON of videos on just about every subject to do with 40k imaginable, so I’d suggest looking up a lore history video from the last few years (lore changes a lot, either new additions or retcons, so older stuff might not be current) to get an overview of the settings and a chronological timeline of major events. Then any specific subjects that catch your eye, look up videos about them specifically. Once you feel like you have a basic understanding of what’s going on, watch something like “If The Emperor Had a Text To Speech Device”. It’s a comedy series that takes a lot of liberties with the canon but it does a good job of getting you in to know about niche topics while also keying you in to long-standing in-jokes.

After that, games like this are a great way to enjoy the setting without spending too much money, and if you like books, there’s a TON of them.

Welcome to 40k! In spite of a lot of the toxicity and weird culture warrior ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that occurs in the online spaces, it really is an incredibly deep and expansive setting to get interested in.

Yeah, they're on Spotify! And on YouTube. Its a tad annoying because sometimes they reference images that you can't see while listening on Spotify. But do some scrolling, click on a topic that seems interesting and listen away!

There's a wide variety of newcomer friendly videos on 40k Theories' channel.
He does a lot of other things but the 90-something different topics in this playlist are comprehensive and without the usual content creator BS that wastes your time.

If you want another game with the Space Marine perspective (and the Blood Ravens, who are less of a "oh look at us, we're so good and noble" chapter than the blueberries here) and how they tend to interact with other factions, Dawn of War 1&2 are both fun games. Later expansions for each of those games also offer campaigns for other factions.

If you don't want time consuming stuff, lots of youtube shorts got plenty of explanation about 40k, while channel like Majorkill contain lots of quick explanation for 40k universe using straightforward sentence that easy to digest.

I'm in the same boat. But full disclosure - the only reasons that I'm even considering this right now are that I finished Black Myth and there's literally nothing but survivor games to play because of the state of gaming. Well, that and the fact that the visuals will look nice on my 4090.

This franchise always seemed like a mix between a budget title and some corny gears of war styled game that I always thought was a strategy game. It looks like a legit action game here so I'm going to give it a shot.

The lore videos though....there's zero chance in hell that I would ever even consider watching something like that LOL...sorry, just every aspect of the visual style of this series looks so dated, that it's comical.

The Game Rouge Trader is a fantastic CRPG that explores a vast amount of 40k.

If you like to read and have the time for it, the Horus Heresy series is a perfect place to start, especially the first books, Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames. The series is set in the time before the current 40k setting. its basically a civil war that set up the current setting 40k is now in.
The Dawn of war game series is also a lot of fun and cheap now; Dawn of War 2 Is one of my classic Favourite RTS games.
