no you dont have to know about it, it is a good introduction to it, however it does make it much more enjoyable with familiarity with the universe.

Same as most other 40k games, its beginner friendly! If you're interested in lore though, I'd check out Adeptus Ridiculous for a quick n' easy lore entry

I mean it wouldnt hurt to look around the wiki a little starting with the person who will be referred to the most in any 40k game https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Emperor_of_Mankind
You can click endlessly on the 40k wiki.

That podcast's motto is 'entertainment over accuracy'. It's for people familiar with 40k to watch DK screw up constantly while Bricky tries and fails to recall 90% of what he's read. I love them but even they admit they're not a proper lore source.

There's a handy 40k for newcomers series on the '40k Theories 'channel. I'd say start with that and then watch adric later.
Look up the video "40K Lore For Newcomers - Who Are... The Space Marines?" for a good start.

It remains accurate while not being a monotonous slog that focuses anally on all the details

its not a good starting point. Wasn't their first episode on the Deathcorps of Krieg if I recall? I was new to the lore at that point and I could tell that the podcast was not what I needed, I dont even think they mentioned the emperor in the first episode. Lorehammer is a much better podcast if you want to start from the beginning.

nah just praise the emperor and kill the tyranid scum

They claim otherwise themselves.

well if you don't know anything Warhammer 40k related, it's kind of confusing...somewhat..especially on prologue since it's a direct continuation of the first Space Marine.

By all means i bet you guys are still able to join the game, but the whole story are designed for 40k fans in mind.

Well yeah, it's not episode by episode. They just cover various topics. Its a good starting point as you get a general frame of reference then have a place to bounce off from to look more into

The best introduction to Space Marine 2 is playing Space Marine 1! : )
The graphics are dated, but the gameplay holds up pretty well!

Heh. . . the asking price for a 13 year old game is a bit ridiculous though.

so how are you going to know where to start? I was literally new to the lore at that point and had became interested because of darktide and I wanted to try and paint some. I was confused when I listened to it. I wanted an overview and an understanding not a really detailed story about this 1 little pocket of the universe.

All you need to know is:
"IT IS BETTER TO DIE FOR THE EMPEROR THAN LIVE FOR YOURSELF."

There we go; and now you're pretty much up-to-speed. :3

Edit:
Well, I suppose if you need a little more lore this short video sums-up everything nicely:

lol, aaaaand this one actually explains the lore in about a minute. :P
