There called Chapters, since you want a short answer think of them as regiments in the military. Some specialise in specific things, perhaps fortification like the Imperial Fists, or "salvaging" other people's wargear from the battlefield like the Blood Ravens.

Each chapter can "normally" trace their linage back to a Space Marine Legion and their Primark, based on a geneseed (an implanted organ that carrys the generic material of that legions Primark that turns a human into a space marine)

So you will see things like the Novamarines, who are linked to the Ultramarines because they share the same Geneseed as they both comes from the same original legion before they split them into chapters and share a geneseed.

You can paint a chapter anything you like, because nothing to say your not just one more chapter linked to a founding from one of the core legions.

honestly just go with what you think looks best

W40k has always encouraged the creation of your own chapters and color schemes for all the different races/factions. Even if there are pre-established ones in the lore, you're completely free to just go with whatever you think looks cool! There are no explicit rules to it and you won't be shamed for making your own designs :)

The different colors typically represent a personality type for Space Marines. As the colors indicate what their "Chapter" is, which essentially denotes their culture. However, this isn't always true. You're also not hard locked into a certain chapter or sub-chapter, as you are more than encouraged to make your own chapter often.

the colours themselves are not really the most important part outside of marketing and aesthetics.

you'd probably just be better looking through the wiki at the different chapter colour schemes and then look into the relevant lore page

Just use google. You will find a lot info about the lore of WH 40K.

You ask the impossible. Not even the emperor himself is capable of that.
Bardiche Sep 2, 2024 @ 5:15am
the colours are for diversity and representation

Asking someone to use Google isn't impossible.

First, you're asking someone to use their creativity ("brains"). Using that capacity aids in development.

Second, it's ideal to learn to research. Ask a person to research and once they get a hang of it, they'll thank you for it.

Third, it expands one's knowledge. If you get a person curious to learn about anything, then that person will grow.

Sure there's a lot of knowledge out there, especially in the 40K universe. That's why it's called "research". You don't know what OP's real interests are until the person asks himself what it is he/she wants to learn about that universe, and comes to the realization that there are aspects that are preferred over others.

Don't kill another's learning. Fan the flames.

What are you going off about?
Dude asked to have every single colors meaning described to him without a wall of text, which is impossible because there's hundreds of chapters.

He didn't ask for a google link, and I have no idea why you're going on some bizarre rant of it.

You're right about that.
