Don't spam buttons, work from defense, unfortunately combat is based on parries not attacks. Attack only when you're sure there's a window.
also remember there is something like contested HP, which is a white bar when you get hit. its small time window when you can regenerate lost HP damaging enemies
My tactic is find med shots. Use the skill as soon as it is available and you have missing health. Using high dmg weapons is recommended. If you charge plasma rifle you can get a lot of dmg but when you are playing with bots, enemies tend to target a player a lot more tbh. I tried to dodge away and hope they agro on npc.
The biggest problem for me is that dodging or parrying a bit too early or too late results in full hits from all attackers, because of the long wind-down animations. Parries must be perfect to get the counter attack that staggers the enemies.
Fighting more than three at once borders onto impossible if they attack in a sequence that makes it impossible to parry or dodge all. This is also the reason why getting surrounded is deadly.
Most important point mentioned by jautja: Do NOT spam buttons. Every press has to be perfect because you cannot animation cancel. When you press an attack it is performed no matter what. Combat is SLOW and tactical. Try to anticipate how many clicks the current enemies take and only click those. You have to constantly expand this anticipation step-by-step. Never mash buttons.
Try to get in a position where there is only one enemy attacking you at once, allowing for a perfect parry. In doubt dodge to the back to get some distance and hip-fire a bit.
Always immediately execute bigger enemies because their death stuns the small gaunts for a while.
Do NOT think that heavy attacks always stagger enemies. Sometimes they do, sometimes not.
Another most important fact: Learn the enemies' attack animations and when they hit. The blue and orange indicators are NOT necessarily the time when you have to dodge/parry.
Most attacks are not telegraphed this way anyway.
It is incredibly difficult, but very rewarding when you actually pull off a whole combat sequence unscathed because you fought flawlessly and tactically.
I was avoiding melee combat in favour of shooting a little to much.
And I also found that dodging and leaving The floating psychic tyranid for last, all tho anoying, makes the fights easier.
