Any tips for knife use? Both against hordes and single target. I love sniper class but my inability to handle melee is making it unfun :(

You're a sniper, you shouldnt be near a horde, if you get surrounded run to your teammates with Horde clear, Sniper should be sitting at the back Picking off the High HP Elites and other Gunners

Also once you get the skill to automatically cloak on a perfect dodge, your general pattern from melee combat is going to be to largely avoid it. Simply dodge, auto cloak, then shoot the enemy in the ass when they turn to run off. The knife is a last resort, for those most desperate situations (your heavy with bolter or plasma needs an assist with some melee bastards and your the only thing nearby for example), or the rare perfect circumstance of backstabbing a Majoris enemy from cloaked.

use often heavy attack to trigger gun strike and as soon a side is open roll out, never get surrounded and keep them in front of you, use your pistol even in close range, it's far more effective in cleaning small fries than using the knife. You should melee really because you don't have the choice or to spare sniper amunition on isolate target.
Until you unlock the cloak on perfect dodge that the best tips i can give you. Once you have this just trigger it and walk away, and limit test with knowing you have a backup plan.

Doesn't the combat knife's sprint melee have some amount of AOE?

The only time you should be using melee as a Sniper is to clear trash mobs on clean up. Something gets close, dodge, auto cloak, get back to shooting.

Defense dodge does wonders.
Also, Knife has quite good 3->heavy against trash.
Completed the last mission on Veteran with knife (after you can drop the hammer) and felt pretty good.

It will be same advice for all melee weapons

Use fencing, no other defense type matters(relic fencing chainsword is bugged)

Dont try to melee hordes, take off gaunts with ranged.

I'm seeing the replies that the Sniper shouldn't be getting in to melee in a melee-focused game and I've got to ask: How much of the match is the Sniper then supposed to take part in when they get so little Ammo and the levels give you fewer resupplies as difficulty increases?

You misunderstand, you see those small things, theyre are called gaunts, dont melee those.

Warriors you can melee to your hearts content.

That is even more confusing since it would make the most sense to me to melee the gaunts and snipe the warriors. I really don't understand this class it seems.

Use the AOE perks to do mass AOE damage and gun strike as often as possible. You should be able to handle any horde even in RUTHLESS if you are good with the parry. Just take out the horde ASAP then down the bigger guys even faster. Unless you are getting ranged then your going to have to stealth murder them you should be able to repeatedly use your stealth if you know what you are doing.

With the perks of knife you should be able to down hordes very fast. The only person who should be womping ass harder than you is assault spamming and the Thunderhammer or grenade launcher spam. That's it you're at top of the pack.

This is my second maxed out class, I'm working on a third now.

It should be, but gaunts will overwhelm you in melee.

Generally killing warriors or any specials will damage gaunts around, so when horde pop you should focus down warriors to take off horde, once they are gone, you can conserve some ammo and finish off any warriors with melee.

You should get the shoulder rush perk its an AOE strike that throws everyone back and can be spammed over and over. Hordes shouldn't be a problem. The knife also comes with an AOE whirlwind already.

Frankly the class really should be called RECON and not SNIPER, your SNIPER is basically a secondary not your primary. You are an elite MELEE ASSASSIN.

You should be right up front showing everyone how to do melee. Only snipe for majoris and bosses that's it. Everything else gets cut up.
