Why are characters referring to Major Sarkaana as "sir" when shes clearly a female?
Was this character originally supposed to be a male? So weird and out of place.

The clones in Star Wars also referred to female jedi as sir

Basically this. But had I not spoke like an ogryn in my earlier response, I'm gonna say that Sarkaana's presence is intimidating enough that the common soldier would instinctively call her "sir"

Sarkaana needs a good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to smooth her out, she way too uptight.
I think the most lenient punishment for attempting to screw her would be servitor conversion. More likely, you're gonna eat a plasma pistol shot between the eyes.

That's called actual equality. She is respected by her others.

id rather take the pistol... becoming a servitor or anything the mechanicus would do if she gave you to them would be... well id rather send my soul to the immaterium.

Lot of people here talking total nonsense. Can't speak for norm in the 40k military but male commissioned officers are called Sir and female commissioned officers are called Ma'am. Non-coms are address by rank

It's out of respect I think. They say sir regardless in warhammer 40k.
It's a military thing. A female officer can choose be called Sir or Ma'am. Most don't mind either one.

Sir is unisex in many military settings. You adress the rank, not the person.
im in the us army and we distinguish by gender. men are sir and females are maam. not sure about other nations

It used to be different, though
Its a military thing.
Military Corps in real life do not call Superior ranked females Ma'am in service its disrespectful because ma'am is still a lesser degree to sir.
Everyone is Sir.
