Focus on chaff for the most part and stick near allies so they don't get overwhelmed since your melta can go through allies. if majors are grouping up, spam melta into them to flinch them and keep them from attacking too often. Use iron halo when facing ranged majors and use it to close the gap. The melta/heavy bolter/ plasma incinerator have a "balanced" parry window. Use the trials to practice parrying
The melta is good at one thing: clearing pack of small enemies.
You know what else can easily packs of small enemies?
EVERYTHING IN THE GAME.
There is nothing sadder than to watch a Heavy try to take down a tyranid warrior with their multimelta and burn half their ammo in the process, and that's before even starting to talk about dealing with Zoanthropes and other boses.
Sure, you'll get a lot of "big number" at the end of the game, but objectively you didn't contribute much to anything.
The weapon is good on paper, especially on some defense objective where you can sit on create and have waves of enemies come toward you (like the end of the first operation), but it's not nearly as good as most people would like you to belive.
The Plasma is the best weapon to deal with any Majoris enemies (Tyranid warriors and Rubrics), a heavy shot will put them in execute state, and since it has a large AoE radius you often can destroy a whole patrol of them in a couple of shots.
The Heavy bolter is a bit trickier, but if you take the ammo penetration skills you'll be able to shoot at large enemy packs and go trough them very easily, while still have a decent long range ability.
Overall each of the Heavy weapons are good and usable, just don't get fooled into thinking only the melta is good.
As for PvE - as often it depends on situation, melta does massive dmg but has lower ammo capacity, then machine gun which works like a bug spray - between those two i prefer machine gun, you can do 30k dmg easy with it (same with melta), but in lethal diff that extra ammo can be very usefull in surviving certain situations and honestly melta is a bit of cheese tactics kinda like using bleed in Elden Ring.
As for plasma - it's a good weapon too, but unlike the previous too, it shines on single target enemies so elites and bosses. Best playstyle i think is mixing plasma with melta or machine gun, for example in decapitation (op2) you can do mission with machine gun or melta and then swap to plasma for boss fight, that's how i roll anyways ;)
Actually heavy is not much good If you want to hunt ranges with range weapons because you need to pick HB while it is hard to use in this version. I recommend T or S instead of H if you want hunting ranged enemies.
Both multi melta and heavy plasma are cheesy and good at close range. Both is good for you but plasma is a little bit harder to use. Heavy plasma is the best OP weapon now. It is even better than melta. Try melta first and try plasma next when you think you are experienced with heavy class. That's the best approach, I think.
Heavy plasma is the second best weapon in game. Uncharge shot blast swarm in radius, Charged shots two shots majories ans deal huge damage to terminus.
The weapon has no weakness and bring a team support over the top.
In fact heavy plasma is so good than bringing heavy melta is terribly bad due to limitation of the weapon. Basically heavy plasma do at range what melta does close
Level the Heavy Plasma Incinerator first. Much more versatile than the melta, and even harder hitting. Don't believe me? Watch TrueVanguard's YouTube video on SM2 weapon damage.
