Here is a Guide. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3332111747
Thunder hammer charged attacks actually have proper damage after the buffs, but some situational awareness to avoid taking too much damage whilst charging up and during the attack animation is required.
Chainsword does have less damage, but is a lot faster and the stomp attack still provides decent AoE. Much easier to react and dodge/parry incoming attacks with.
Assault does rely a lot on gun strikes in either case, make sure to take the armour on gun strike perk and +50% dmg one. It's a lot easier to stay alive when a refilled armour bar is always one gunstrike away.
Fencing variation for Chainsword. It's more of a side grade to hammer. Faster, but lacks aoe properties, harder to hit multiple enemies. Weaker crowd control. Takes a bit more additional damage before you can oneshot majoris with airborne slam. But still feels good to use.
Power fist is absolute worst. It cant hit enemies around you, barely even hits enemies infront of you. Pathetic aoe and crowd control. They really need to change this weapon somehow to make it perform as good as other 2. You can still have fun with it too, but it requires A LOT more additional effort to do what hammer and chainsword can do by default. Do it at your own risk. Fencing variation again.
I have used all three, all three are viable but once you cheese the Thunder Hammer, its over.. its good with its special attacks and i love that about it. but if you don't know how to get the right perks and stuff on the thunder hammer than stick to Chainsword but if you ever figured the Thunder Hammer OUT you know what I am talking about xD
Thunder hammer is alright if you just wanna smash things without thinking too hard, just ground slam all day. But you will take damage eventually. Defeinitely the Coolest Weapon of the assault.
Power fist... If you are masochist I guess. It works, but that's all I can say about it.
The hammer is the best weapon in regards to damage and because of its slighty higher weapon damage in regards to the chainsword, your jet pack ground pounds also do slightly more damage.
In return, the hammer is slow af and requires you to play very optimally in order to avoid getting hammered by majoris red attacks. Enraged tyranid ranged majoris (on lethal) are deadly when they switch to you while you are charging attacks.
The chainsword is easy to use and has other benefits as well like letting you gap close mid combo with shoulder dash etc. It is also better at killing minoris, since light attacks from hammer tend to just knock them away, so you need a second hit to take them out wich double stomp already solves.
I think both weapons have their place and are kinda on equal terms, provided you are very good with the hammer.
On lower difficulties up to substantial, I always pick up the thunder hammer, while for lethal clears I exclusively played chainsword.
Regarding the power fist tho... there are already enough threads and other content going into deteil why the weapon is just bad and more importantly for me it is just not fun to use.
With "slightly" you mean 14 dmg compared to 9,5? That is 47% more base damage, plus the fencing relic hammer has an additional additive 10% bonus damage. At least call it what it is, a considerable difference. The rest of your points still stand.
Adding to that is that the 2nd - 4th hit with the chainsword and the kick do like 25% more damage than the first swing and the shoulder dash does double damage.
Anyways, I made that statement in regards to ground pound and even though the base light swing of the hammer is double that of the chainsword, ground pound with chainsword does not do to half the damage, I can tell you that. :)
Sword if you rather spam combos.
Fist can go ♥♥♥♥ themselves tho.
If you manage the combos offence as well as defence and perk correctly, you offer massive aoe crowd control and damage to the squad.
Sadly the playerbase seems to struggle handling Vespasius, still one of the most fun and deadliest classes.
Obv. the Chainsword and Powerfist are viable options as well. But even after some buffs the Powerfist still seems the weakest to me.
That makes it somewhat worse against bosses and chaos. That's the main tradeoff compared to the chainsword.
Thunder Fist is arguably one of the worst weapons in the game.
You're gonna wanna use your jump pack for aoe mobs, or to interrupt reinforcement calls, so I don't pay much attention to the aoe of the weapon. Most of Assault's single target damage comes from gunstrikes anyway, so you'll not be relying on melee attacks that much in Ruthless and Lethal.
It's more about a strong single attack and ease of use of the weapons.
- The power fist combo's are horrifically clunky; worse than the combat knife.
- The Thunder Hammer has like 2 combos and the heavy attack does great damage if necessary.
- The Chainsword has a nice string whether you go 1, 2, 3, or 4 light into a heavy, and it's easy enough to stop in case you need to dodge.
