How does the multiplayer progression work?

I tend to only play video games now when I'm playing with friends and don't do much solo gaming anymore. Wondering how extensive the progression is in SM2? I watched the trailer and I know they showed you on maps with up to 3 other players, customizations, etc; but didn't elude to how the game progresses in multiplayer. Is it like solo but with 3 people or just map after map with no real goes other than completing the map? As a clarifying comment I'm not asking about PvP just 4 x multiplayer progression.

ok here is how it works, You play you "level" and you unlock ♥♥♥♥ ^^

The game has two MP modes, a 3 player PvE mode where you play through objective driven missions with dynamic enemy spawns in the style of Left 4 Dead and similar titles, and a 6v6 PvP mode. You earn EXP and currency in both, allowing you to unlock skill, weapons, cosmetics etc. for your MP character.

Yes, thanks @sovereign! Sounds like we get sort of a Hell Divers 2 kind of experience vs a campaign/story like Gears of War. I was hoping it was closer to Gears of War, but we've definitely sunk a lot of time and loving Hell Divers 2

The game does have a full Gear of War-style singleplayer/co-op story campaign as well.
