Ive never seem a bolt round not have a casing in books or in other games. I dont know why they would have a ejection slot then otherwise if they didnt have casings, or was this really early lore or something?

They are two stage ammo. The charge in the casing is only there to accelerate the Bolt down the Barrel until he cleared the Muzzle.
After that, the rocket propulsion of the Bolt itself takes over.

From the 40k wikia

https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Bolter_Ammunition?so=search#Calibre

"Whereas conventional solid slugs utilise a propellant charge contained in a casing that forces the bullet down the barrel upon ignition, in contrast, a bolt is self-propelled; it features its own integrated solid fuel propellant that propels the bolt at high speeds, essentially acting like a miniature rocket.

The propellant itself is shaped to control the bolt's direction and speed; however, this method of rocket propulsion would normally warp the barrel due to gas pressure. The Bolter uses an ingenious two-stage method to prevent this.

As well as the rocket propellant, a small conventional charge is also utilised. This charge is strong enough to force the bolt out of the barrel at a significant muzzle velocity, and simultaneously ignite the bolt's propellant.

The rocket-propellant is precisely fused to ignite immediately as the bolt leaves the barrel, alleviating any possibility of pressure build-up. The bolt then accelerates toward the target under its own power. "

Depends on the iteration.

There is official artwork on published works going back many years with bolters firing cased rounds.

And the original artwork by the artist which did the cover for a cleaner view.

eh looks cool

I've seen plenty of WH40k stuff with bolters ejecting casings. The 9th edition trailer for example clearly shows shell casings, even focusing on them hitting the ground in slow-mo.

look at the background of this thread...that gun has an ejection port and the sword is wrapped in a chain with teeth that rotate around the sword. LOL

Bolters aren't 1-to-1 with gyrojet rounds. They use a conventional charge, usually interpreted as having a casing, in order to propel themselves full-speed out the barrel, and then the gyrojet-stage kicks in so that it remains full speed far longer than a conventional bullet.

Yeah i miss interperted lore, my bad folks.

If were being honest only lore nerds even know it's supposed to shoot mini rockets. For the general public I think they intentionally try to make it just look like a big assault rifle. Darktide probably did the best job of distinguishing it but then that was because you had regular autoguns, and lasguns to compare it to.

its a honest mistake really to mis-interpert it a bit.

I'm not poo-pooing you, I don't mind gushing about 40k lore with someone who isn't actively trying to somehow prove I'm a fake fan, I just figured I'd throw my hat in the ring. Glad we got it settled!
