Is diversity in Video Games being forced?

I am exhausted by the insistence on diversity in video games. I often fail to see its necessity. For instance, in Superman games, you play as Superman, who is a man. No one was asking to play a female version of Superman back then. Similarly, in GTA5, you play as two male characters, and everyone enjoyed the game as it was.

Requests for LGBTQIA+ representation in games like Elden Ring... it's tiresome. Pff, don't you have something else to do on your life?

I believe these changes should occur naturally, not be forced. Initially, I had no strong feelings about this issue, but now I find it annoying. I'm tempted to block these discussions. Seriously, every time a new game is about to be released on Steam, these topics flood the forums... It's overwhelming.

Diversity should evolve organically, not be pushed. I understand why some people oppose companies like Sweet Baby Inc and boycott the games they've contributed to. I'm starting to feel the same way...

It's disappointing...

Please, stop pushing these changes. You risk being disliked more than anything else... You're going against what's right...

There's so many aspects to this topic that it's hard to discuss without writing an essay.

I'll just say that progressives can be clumsy braindead zombies who don't understand what they are doing as they droolingly fat finger all over beloved existing IP instead of creating new IP. They don't understand what they are doing, and they don't understand the backlash they are creating causing everyone to hate them.

The lack of thougtfulness and care is the real problem. Ideally they should create their own IP instead of harming beloved existing stuff, and that is slowly happening as there is more and more of that. It just sucks in the meantime that the feckless morons amongst them who don't know how to add what they want within the natural flow of worldbuilding and don't understand the IP are left to run around like a herd of manure covered oafs.

They did. They created 40k. Look into its two founders, Rick Priestley and Alessio Cavatore. Present GW is operating on the foundation laid out by Rick Priestley. Even back when Priestley worked on Mordheim with Tuomas Pirinen (creator of Trench Crusade), he was progressive and anti-authoritarian on his political stances.

I would say that only a decade ago - we could have games with a 'diverse' lead and nobody batted an eyelash.

The issue now is that companies force this 'diversity' into everything - often at the expense of story, character development, setting or lore. It's gotten so bad that just seeing a game have a 'diverse' lead instantly makes people concerned it's going to be a 'woke' property.

DEI is the bane of everything it tries to stand for as it creates more division and sows more disharmony. Worse, most of the adherents of DEI refuse to listen to anyone with issues - and rather than have an intelligent conversation, they resort to insults and calling everyone a bigot.

It's old. It's tiresome. And people are starting to get fed up en masse.

It's funny that you say that because I think it's quite the opposite - whining about what making sure everyone is 'represented'.

THEY ARE!

A simple stat for how 'represented' minorities are is the homosexual population. The average American thinks that the percentage of gays in society is 20%+ .... when it's ~7%. That's because gays ARE represented - maybe even over-represented.

The same goes for blacks or hispanics. They represent about 12% of the country each - but the average American thinks that the number is double. Only 1 in 10 Americans surveyed guessed within 10-14%. That's because these minorities ARE represented.

Just look at an ad break. Count the number of blacks compared to every other person. I just did it for this post and it was 28:3 (and one of those three was likely hispanic and not white).

All that said, it really doesn't matter EXCEPT that it's being forced to tick a box. It's pandering.
