I think somewhere there is a sensible discussion to be had over the merrits of whether Female Space Marines are a good idea or not. I can see the points on both sides. However I find most folks bring a lot (and I mean A LOT) of baggage and assumptions to these discussions making it almost impossible to have a sensible talk, and inevitably things devolve into flinging insults at each other.
Agreed. o_O
Typharius, I think it would be cool for people to have the option to play as a female Astartes, that's it, no other strings attached. As Games Workshop expands their audience I see value in letting girls join the faction the majority of the stories and lore is focused around. It makes things like playable female characters much less-awkward in games like this.
I know this goes against precedent for what's been established in the lore, but with the advent of Primaris Marines the process for building marines has changed. Could it allow for female marines now? Maybe yes, maybe no. Ultimately, that's for GW to decide.
I'm totally sympathetic towards the resistance to change, lol there's plenty of changes GW's made that I despise; don't get me started with what they've done to poor Warhammer Fantasy! XD
lol, and I imagine I'm about as impressed with Starwars and Marvel right now as you are, which is to say I'm aghast with the direction it's going. x_x
When you boil down a Sister of Battle you have a zealously faithful elite warrior who is viciously armed and armored, but just human. There are plenty of existing factions that already fulfil this archtype for men in 40k.
When you boil down the Space Marines (or Custodes) you have a Gene-Enhanced super human that's armed and armoured like a walking tank. Up until the recent introduction of female custodians there was no existing faction that fulfilled this archtype for women. I don't think it's a terrible thing to give girls the cool toys too. (That's not even delving into the fact that Space Marines are the iconic mascot of the 40k franchise.)
In the lore there's also the Decree Passive, which forbids the church from having 'Men Under Arms.' The Sisters of Battle are something of a satirical take on how the Ecclesiarchy bypasses this restriction. . . although adjustments could be made if GW wanted to. (Primaris Marines are evidence of that)
I suspect if GW really wanted to do it they could make it work one way or another.
Oh sure, creating a gene-enchanced super human archtype for women doesn't specifically need to be "female space marines / custodians." (although the later has already happened now.)
It could have been that particularly notable Sisters of Battle undergo a process that enhances them. Or it could have been something else entirely.
Although 'Super Sisters of Battle' probably gives the Ecclesiarchy far far too much power. I can't imagine the Lords of Terra would be big fans of that. And the Ecclesiarchy certainly isn't allowed to petition Custodian Guards. . . so maybe GW was in the right for choosing Custodians as the faction for also being female.
Ideally it would be nice to have have things not feel shoehorned in. Which is why I don't think GW did a particularly good job at adding female custodians into the lore.
