Why is there a black dude who is an ultramarine
I really don't care one way or the other but just curious if the lore has changed?
I thought only the Salamanders had black Marines and the Ultramarines are white guys only?

Also why does he say Zeee NOHs instead of Zeee NAHs?

So it's lore friendly, altho idk if ultras were ever strictly one race in depiction

This is why I don't understand when people talk about black ultramarines (there was a black ultramarine on Avenging Son and people complained too). Ultramar is vast and has tons of planets and possibly tons of different races too, why is it so hard to believe there are non-white people? It will be like people complained that there are non asian white scars, like what? The race or skin has nothing to do with gene seed compatibility and worthiness of a normal human turning into an Astartes. The only exception are the Salamanders, but mostly because they literally turn charcoal black (or whatever the name of the color is) due to a gene mutation. Even if a chapter only recruits from a single planet, it is hard to believe that there are not more than one race on it with different skin colors, unless that planet has super low population, in which case I doubt they would recruit from only there.

Their skin is jet black. Its a mutation.

That's goofy, you do realize that human skin mutates naturally according to the intensity of radiation received from the sun right? And if the radiation was as intense as on Prometheus, we'd all be jet black too. If we could survive the heat, that is. I'm guessing you've never seen a Sudanese or any other Nilotic African. :D

I meant the mutation is in the gene seed. That's why if affects the entire legion.

I know nothing about the lore of 40k
Darktide is the first Warhammer game I ever played so I know nothing about Salamanders or any of this stuff.

from the outside looking in, the question OP asked is pretty silly in my opinion and Ive seen quite of few players that was in these comments talking about how there shouldn't be people of color in the game is just so odd.

Are people really this afraid of change? And if its not really change, why are there few people so against it. Its like they are really angry and upset like they were charged twice for lunch or something.

is it really that serious? Reminds me of how people were losing their marbles to see a storm trooper with brownskin lol. Or a Mafia game staring a dude with brown skin.... its something so small that really gets under their skin.

I am glad this Topic isnt closed because it is allowing the public to see how strong beliefs and probably some racial undertones can really make people look crazy lol.

You dont really see ever games that contain people of color and introduce a white character and people lose their marbles.... Heck, you even see the last samurai, prince of Persia, and many many others staring a white dude and still there was no fuss over it...

but if you have something that stars white characters and if you DARE add someone whos not white, its like these special people just lose their shat....

Its like entitlement or something close to it.

Space Marines are a core aspect of the lore, one of the things that's changed the least for the last near forty years of 40K. They're the poster child for 40K. They're such a central and core identity of 40K that the fanbase is almost entirely adamant that they remain as they are, a fraternal order of warrior monks. There is a tiny but very vocal group that want female space marines but nobody really takes them seriously or cares about their opinion.

How it works is, there's this implant called a geneseed. The geneseed is an organ that regulate and helps integrate the rest of a space marine's additional organs into the neophyte's body, allowing for faster healing, tougher bones etc. The geneseed is incredibly rare and valuable and it would not be wasted on anything but the most perfect of aspirants.

It's implanted into an initiate who survives an incredibly lethal initiation process where you could have anything from zero to five-ish survivors of a hundred initiates survive into becoming an aspirant. The aspirants need to be within a range of genetic flexibility or be similar enough to the primarch in order for the geneseed to take root and start the process of becoming a space marine. If the geneseed doesn't take to the aspirant's genetics, then the aspirant will not be a space marine. Ever. Depending on the chapter, he'll be made a serf, returned to his people or killed. Assuming he survives, he becomes a neophyte and undergoes intentionally risky surgeries to test the organs that they're implanting into him are working as they should.

As I've argued in this thread at multiple points, nobody cares or has a problem with the concept of a black Ultramarine. Space marines in general (except for the Salamanders for specific reasons) have an organ called the melanchromic organ. This organ adjusts the melanin in a space marine's skin depending on the degree of ambient radiation. Typically a space marine's armour is fully NPC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protected so space marines would generally be pale but if they are unarmoured or would remove their helmets and the local conditions were severe enough, they could rapidly darken to being ebony black.

I will admit as I can't recall off the top of my head, I don't know if the melanchromic organ would reduce the melanin content of a marine who is black to white or return him to base levels as it's never been stated in the books to the best of my knowledge. I could easily see the melanchromic organ reducing the melanin content of a black marine so he'd look like an albino or just as equally to his default melanin levels. Beyond the Salamanders, it's just something that's not relaly touched on much in the books.

There is no actual issue, but unfortunately the Warhammer Universe attracts a LOT of white supremacists and nazis and they take offence to other people of other races, creed, sexuality, etc. That tends to be the source of a lot of discourse

Would you be okay with black, asian or latino supremacists being attracted to the warhammer universe though

I personally don't care about their skin color, but if they start SPEAKING like the stereotypical black person, I will have issues and will be refunding this.

I have always heard it was from Nocturne's environment.

"It should be noted that the people of Nocturne have been slightly mutated by their constant exposure to the high levels of radioactivity present on their world due to the radioactive rare earth elements often uncovered by the extreme volcanism. They have developed deep ebony skins, regardless of their original ethnicities, and the irises of their eyes now glow red in the darkness because they developed over many generations the ability to see in the infrared levels of the electromagnetic spectrum to deal with the constant volcanic pollution that blocks out their world's sunlight."

Did they recently change the lore?

No, they haven't changed the lore, not that I know of.
But not too many people have read that paragraph before I think.
By the way, the Pariah Nexus episodes are awesome!!
I never cared much about the Salamanders, until I started reading their books in the Horus Heresy, now they are one of my most beloved Legions. *ahem* Even though I prefer Chaos Space Marines.

Some guys will never stop being triggered over the existence of a black space marine. It interferes too much with their white male power fantasy.
