Vanguard: Saga of Heroes F2P

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes F2P

Good Game. F**k what ya heard, try it yourself.
Nuff said. Im an MMO Vet, played eveything from old to new. Although it doesn't have the sparkle of some of the new games it takes the older model of MMOs (i.e. EQ, DAoC), gives it a more modern finish and adds an extremely vast world.

I'm not in the business of selling others products, however, I will recommend something if I believe someone may not see a hidden gem. That is what this one is. Tons of negative hype, probably due to Brad McQuaid and the hype prior to release (along with the problematic release).

If your looking for a game with depth and enjoyed the old school MMOs like EQ when they were in their prime you will most likely enjoy this.

As far as technical issues, I have played this one quite a bit and never had any issues that would make me feel as though it was unplayable (Now. At release I would have said the exact opposite). There is, however, enough tech issues where you will get the feeling that it lacks the polish a game like this deserves. Although improved from where it had been that is probably the biggest reason it didn't reach the level of success it could have.

This I believe was primarily due to the history behind Vanguard and how they took possession of the rights to the Hero Engine (if you stick around long enough you'll end up hearing about that).

Bottom Line...for a now F2P game it is absolutely worth trying. I play or have played nearly everything released free or pay to play since the original Everquest release. This is one of the few I am still willing to pay for, and I am a stingy pr@ck.

/applaud. I agree. This game is alot better than people think or make it out to be.
I have tried a few times over the years to like this game and for some reason it just doesn't click for me at all. Its not the looks of it (I play EQ2 so old graphics are not an issue.) I dunno it just feels clunky and by clunky I dont mean how it runs on my computer (which is fine) but the games mechanics/combat/crafting etc it just doesn't gel for me.

I may have another look at it now the f2p restrictions have been relaxed but I imagine ti will be the same as usual and I will quickly run out of will to log in and play it.

Having said that I am glad some people find it fun and are enjoying it. I suppose if you have some spare time it doesn't hurt anything to give it a shot as you may find you enjoy it. Just because it seems its not for me that doesn't mean you won't find some fun in it somewhere, as we all like different things after all :)

Weird thats exactly how I feel about EQ 2 I think we live on opposite sides of the mirror.........
This game is simply incredible. I'm extremely happy to see it coming back, I missed it so much, too many dissapointing MMO's for too many years now. =[

With the new F2P model I think this game could really make a comeback, I heard their team is growing again too.

I come from the old school early 90s mmorpg generation...merdian 59, UO, EQ, Asherons Call, DAoC, yup played and capped them all. I just started playing Vanguard yesterday and the game is fantastic. I'm not even sure why I ignored this game all these years.

Vanguard is not a casual mmorpg like W**, R*ft, SWT*R. This is old school down and dirty mmorpg. This is not your little nephew's mmorpg. This is classic mmorpg with depth. I think a lot of the negative comments are coming from those whose first ever mmorpg experience was W*W- a very casual, kindergarten mmorpg. Yes Vanguard has very outdated graphics and I don't care. There are tons of mmos out there that's graphically beautiful but horrible gameplay. Yes it has bugs...so are all the other new mmos out there. Just go into the other mmo forums and you'll see all the "bug" complaints.

Some of the things I love about Vanguard...a)land mass is MASSIVE b)brutal death penalty- yup I am loving it. Casual mmos slap you on the hand for dying. Vanguard punches you in the face for dying. Death penalty is not as brutal as DAoC or Asherons, but close enough.

Try it first and at least get to level 20 before you make a conclusion. And to those who have played Vanguard for so many and quit because of game issues, take care.

I really don't think the graphics are all bad. The textures and lighting are actually pretty good.
I'm glad i read this i keep hearing nothing but bad ♥♥♥♥ but by laxed f2p does this mean more class race combos allowed i tried to jump on everquest and f2p was more like a demo i understand i won't be able to run end game content but how watered down is the f2p in this game?

Like Ican't said, they unlocked the classes, but if you are even remotely serious about running group content (of which this game has a lot) you will be very disappointed as the good gear, be it drops or quest rewards, can only be equipped by gold subscribers.

On the other hand, there is plenty more to do in this game than run dungeons. Diplomacy is neat and crafting is fantastic, but I'm sure there's things in those spheres that are reserved for subscribers that I haven't stumbled upon yet.

It's more of a demo, TBH... yes, you can play it to get a feel for the game, but if you want to be able to keep up with the members and don't want to p2p, you're better off with LotRO or something.
Having put a few days into it now i feel ill end up subbing within the next few months im just a little weary to the mmo failing i had just got back into CoH when the just dropped it like dead weight with eq3 coming whats the staying power of this game?
meaning while the game rewards you for your hard work how long would i have to enjoy my level 55 discraki that can build houses and pretty much solo everything?v i mean if i put a year into this game and it just crashes id be pissed i feel i have change as a gamer after getting plats in both demon souls and dark souls and am now look for that next addiction i just dont wanna waste my time if im going to lose my charater after i put all the work this game requires to put into him
@ Stiff

You and everybody else. That's the big question here: will the game last? If so, for how long? Nobody knows and everybody's worried about it, but this is the only MMORPG that I like so my only option is to play and try to push these concerns into the back of my mind. It doesn't always work, though. Realistically, how long can a single active server of players (Halgar is dead weight, let's face it) make an entire MMOG profitable enough to justify upkeep costs? Needless to say I'm always researching other titles when I'm not logged on, just in case...

I played Vanguard during beta, and up to about 2 years after release. It was a good game. It was a great game before the difficulty nerfs (GU1/2). Sadly, after 2 years my guild had dissipated, which was a bummer because I had all tradeskills maxed and all classes maxed. The game had a LOT of potential, and could have been better then just about any MMORPG I've seen in the last 10 years. I may give it a try again, I truly did enjoy it.

Key points of the game that I remember being amazing:

Houses were awesome. It takes multiple crafting professions to complete a house. And you can craft the cosmetics to decorate the house as well. You also get trophies to put in your house for accomplishing raids.

Bloodmage/Disciple were amazing as new classes. A healer that sacrfices his own life (bloodmage) and links themself to the tank to share damage while lifetapping between himself and the tank. Was funny when a Bloodmage new to raiding accidently lifetaps the wrong monster causing an insta-gib of the raid tank as well. Disciple was a melee healer, chaining abilities together to proc different heals on the tank/raid.

Diplomacy was a great new aspect to crafting. Instead of actually "making" things, you have discussions with NPC's using a card system to try to get them to agree to a specific point of view. This rewarded you with items, and in some cases provided buffs to entire zones. Great for giving your raid a boost before a raid.

Boats! Crafters can make boats. Everything from a small dingy to a galleon. And you can pull your boat out and go cruising around the ocean, or down a river.

Open world questing. Dungeons (at least from 1-50) are all open world.

Flying mounts, Vanguard released flying mounts before W*W. It may have changed, but the flying mounts were achieved through an epic questline spanning multiple levels. Getting into raid dungeons is also accomplished via completing quests.
So, I have to download this after reading all your positive comments. Good for my internet cafe...Many customers will play this. I have already DOTA 2 and they enjoyed a lot.. I just want to add this game...
I tryed alots of mmorpg in market in last few years....and just discovered VG....and i m realy realy impresed about this game: very good one ! I stop subscription on Tera an SWTOR for VG....best f2p mode i ever see it: no class, bag, money, mount, map, etc restriction....realy nice game !
