I may have another look at it now the f2p restrictions have been relaxed but I imagine ti will be the same as usual and I will quickly run out of will to log in and play it.
Having said that I am glad some people find it fun and are enjoying it. I suppose if you have some spare time it doesn't hurt anything to give it a shot as you may find you enjoy it. Just because it seems its not for me that doesn't mean you won't find some fun in it somewhere, as we all like different things after all :)
Weird thats exactly how I feel about EQ 2 I think we live on opposite sides of the mirror.........
With the new F2P model I think this game could really make a comeback, I heard their team is growing again too.
I come from the old school early 90s mmorpg generation...merdian 59, UO, EQ, Asherons Call, DAoC, yup played and capped them all. I just started playing Vanguard yesterday and the game is fantastic. I'm not even sure why I ignored this game all these years.
Vanguard is not a casual mmorpg like W**, R*ft, SWT*R. This is old school down and dirty mmorpg. This is not your little nephew's mmorpg. This is classic mmorpg with depth. I think a lot of the negative comments are coming from those whose first ever mmorpg experience was W*W- a very casual, kindergarten mmorpg. Yes Vanguard has very outdated graphics and I don't care. There are tons of mmos out there that's graphically beautiful but horrible gameplay. Yes it has bugs...so are all the other new mmos out there. Just go into the other mmo forums and you'll see all the "bug" complaints.
Some of the things I love about Vanguard...a)land mass is MASSIVE b)brutal death penalty- yup I am loving it. Casual mmos slap you on the hand for dying. Vanguard punches you in the face for dying. Death penalty is not as brutal as DAoC or Asherons, but close enough.
Try it first and at least get to level 20 before you make a conclusion. And to those who have played Vanguard for so many and quit because of game issues, take care.
all races and classes are unlocked now
Like Ican't said, they unlocked the classes, but if you are even remotely serious about running group content (of which this game has a lot) you will be very disappointed as the good gear, be it drops or quest rewards, can only be equipped by gold subscribers.
On the other hand, there is plenty more to do in this game than run dungeons. Diplomacy is neat and crafting is fantastic, but I'm sure there's things in those spheres that are reserved for subscribers that I haven't stumbled upon yet.
It's more of a demo, TBH... yes, you can play it to get a feel for the game, but if you want to be able to keep up with the members and don't want to p2p, you're better off with LotRO or something.
You and everybody else. That's the big question here: will the game last? If so, for how long? Nobody knows and everybody's worried about it, but this is the only MMORPG that I like so my only option is to play and try to push these concerns into the back of my mind. It doesn't always work, though. Realistically, how long can a single active server of players (Halgar is dead weight, let's face it) make an entire MMOG profitable enough to justify upkeep costs? Needless to say I'm always researching other titles when I'm not logged on, just in case...
Key points of the game that I remember being amazing:
Houses were awesome. It takes multiple crafting professions to complete a house. And you can craft the cosmetics to decorate the house as well. You also get trophies to put in your house for accomplishing raids.
Bloodmage/Disciple were amazing as new classes. A healer that sacrfices his own life (bloodmage) and links themself to the tank to share damage while lifetapping between himself and the tank. Was funny when a Bloodmage new to raiding accidently lifetaps the wrong monster causing an insta-gib of the raid tank as well. Disciple was a melee healer, chaining abilities together to proc different heals on the tank/raid.
Diplomacy was a great new aspect to crafting. Instead of actually "making" things, you have discussions with NPC's using a card system to try to get them to agree to a specific point of view. This rewarded you with items, and in some cases provided buffs to entire zones. Great for giving your raid a boost before a raid.
Boats! Crafters can make boats. Everything from a small dingy to a galleon. And you can pull your boat out and go cruising around the ocean, or down a river.
Open world questing. Dungeons (at least from 1-50) are all open world.
Flying mounts, Vanguard released flying mounts before W*W. It may have changed, but the flying mounts were achieved through an epic questline spanning multiple levels. Getting into raid dungeons is also accomplished via completing quests.
