Explorers?

So, I've built the Statistics Office, which apparently creates Explorers. At this point, I have no idea what to do with this. Does the exploration happen automatically, or do I need to point them towards the edge?

Click a random shadow tile and it'll show an option to explore the surrounding area

Excellent - now I don't have to do the "build a hut, destroy the hut" version of exploration...ha...
