Try out the f2p content, and if you like, buy Rise of the Godslayer at a fair price; you'll get 30 days of access to the entire game (yes you can reach 80 in that time) and unlock a few benefits if you decide to stick around when it reverts to free-to-play content. Montlhy bundle prices are cheaper than single month purchases, but you'll know within a month if it's the game for you.
If you do buy Rise of the Godslayer, once your free time is up you'll have to sub to keep playing it. Later this year they'll be changing it so once bought you can play it while in F2p status like their other two packs.
There's only 3 servers now. 1 PVE and 2 different PvP and both are pretty low pop's.
The starter island is amazing; fully voiced, full quests and full of players (PVE). While the rest of the game is hit and (mostly miss) on the voice acting it's a good game unlike any other out there. Well worth the long load to try out to see if you do want to put money into it. I've been playing F2p since the switch and have only put $20 into it for 1 of the quest packs so you don't HAVE to sub to have fun.
Content is largely f2p until max level (80), for endgame stuff you do need to subscribe (and buy Rise of the Godslayer). End game is a mix of solo faction questing, running group instances (6-man), and raiding (24-man). There is a decent amount of pick-up groups running, even for raiding up to T4. T5 and T6 and almost exclusively done in guilds or with friends.
Definitely not p2w.
