Game won't start anymore
Out of a sudden, the game wont start anymore.
Steam says its running, its visible in the task manager but besides of that... no window, no game! HELP

Disable your Steam cloud saves by:
* Going into your Steam Library, right-clicking on Heretic's Fork and select Properties
* Under the General tab, the Cloud Synchronization setting can be toggled - please uncheck this box to disable cloud saves.

Try launching the game, if it launches then stop here, otherwise continue with the below.

* Locate the game saves folder using the search bar to locate C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Heretic_s_Fork then double-click the FULL folder.
* Move the file called save0.txt from inside this folder to a different location for safekeeping and then delete the "Heretic_s_Fork" save folder completely and relaunch the game.

Once you have relaunched the game, it should generate a new save folder - once this has happened, close the game and move the "save0.txt" file back into the "FULL" folder - you will be asked if you would like to replace the file that the game has regenerated automatically, please choose yes.

Try launching the game again, if it works then stop here. Your save file should be working. Otherwise continue with the below.

If none of the above work, it indicates that your save file has become corrupted and cannot be restored (sorry). I'm not sure what causes this but I'm 95% sure it's due to Steams cloud sync causing weird issues. If this has caused issues on your system then please keep it turned off for Heretic's Fork.

* Keep cloud sync turned off, delete the "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Heretic_s_Fork" folder.
* Launch the game with a fresh start.
* As long as you keep cloud sync disabled the issue should not return.

If you want to be super safe, then keep the save0.txt file backed up on your system in case I can think up a fix in a future update to restore them to working order.

If you have made it this far and your game still doesn't run, please let me know.

Hi.

Having the exact same issue here. Was running fine for a couple of days after purchase, and now out of nowhere, poof won't start anymore.

Exactly the same, says it's running, I see it in task manager, but nothing happens.

For OP, maybe post your system specs so others can help you out?

Here are mine :

- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
- 16,0 Go RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

Here's what I tried so far :

- Updated GC drivers
- Restarted PC
- Checked integrity of installed files
- Uninstalled / Reinstalled the game
- Disabled VPN
- Made it an exception in my firewall
- Set the EXE files to run as admin

I might even forget some other things I tried, so I'm running out of options.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have the exact same problem, worked fine for 11 hours and now nothing.
Unistalling installing doesnt fix

I'm looking into this issue. It's really strange and I don't know what's causing it.

I'm trying to narrow down the causes.

* Do you own the Into the Fire DLC?
* Did this occur after purchasing the into the fire DLC?
* Have you tried clearing your save data and trying again?

To clear the save files, go to your local save data:
%localappdata%\Heretic_s_Fork\FULL

Then remove the file called save0.txt

Keep a backup of the save0.txt as this contains all your progression.

Try launching. Let me know if this allows the game to launch please.

I bought the DLC after the problem. At this moment i thought a simple restart or try again tomorrow would fix the problem!
I cleared the Save Data, no change. Still no Game, only visible in task manager or steam as current playing.

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue. It occurred after closing the game using Alt+F4.
Steam says its running and I can see it task manager, but nothing happens.


what I tried so far:

- Checked files integrity
- Restarted the Game / Steam / PC
- Uninstalled / Reinstalled the game
- Starting Steam and the Game as admin
- Clearing Cache of Windows / Nvidia / Steam
- Cleard the save files (%localappdata%\Heretic_s_Fork\FULL)


My specs:

- AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor
- 32GB Ram
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

and Drivers / Windows are updated

Okay, I got it to work again.

Here's what I did:

1. Uninstalled the game
2. Disabled Steam Cloud
3. Deleted the remaining game files and cache
4. Installed the game again
5. Started the game and then closed it
6. Reactivated Steam Cloud
7. On Steam, when Steam Cloud showed a sync error, I used Local Files

It deleted my progress, but I can play again, so that's fine by me
Hope that helps anyone who wasn't as far in the game as I was!

Just tried the game as well and same issue, and no I don't have the DLC, verified the files and so on. Haven't tried deleting the file though but can try that tomorrow if it would still help =)

So moving the save file from the folder does work and the game will reboot, but it just means all progress gets borked for some reason - when putting the file back the game goes back to not opening.

I don't own the DLC, after clearing the save data (moving the file out) game boots fine, but when the data is added back it no longer opens.

Then I take it back....I will not be moving my savefile after all =p

I have the same issue as well. It has to do with the save file to be sure. How far in did everyone make it? I am guessing it is after we hit a certain level in the game that there is an issue with the save file. I'm happy to provide my save file if helps the debug process

Ok, so update. I found a fix... kind of. It lets you play but you have to do it everytime. So remove the save file (I kept it just in case) then disable steam cloud. Launch the game. Then close it, delete the new save file and re-enable cloud save and. Relaunch the game, and you have it will launch and load your data. However next time you launch it the problem returns so you have to repeat the process.

ps once this gets fixed i will be picking up the dlc, I don't have it yet.

Moved my save, deactivated steamcloud, launched the game... and it starts!
As soon as i move my save back in and activate steam cloud, it wont work anymore.
Same with a new Save and activated steam cloud.

It would be a shame if all my progress is lost or will be lost because there is no fix without starting over and over again.
