I don't understand checkpoints

Can someone explain how checkpoints work. Sometimes when I die after passing a checkpoint I will still go back to the start of the level instead of the checkpoint. Other times I go to the checkpoint. I can't figure out why I don't just always start back at the checkpoint.

You can skip a checkpoint by jumping over it.

Jumping over the red bar skips the checkpoint, and gives you a 25,000 point bonus, but you are at risk of going back to the start.

Running across it (touching the red bar) activates the checkpoint, so that is your new starting point when you bonk, but no bonus is given.
