Perks are an essential part of the game. The best tactic for level 5 is buying the perks that allow you to place the coins quickly early on. A well timed skill stop can be life saving. Coiners start with 10K budget to pay the buy-in for the first levels but also for a few perks. Also, remember to check and sell specials, as those are not essential to the beginning of the game. The extra cash allows you to upgrade your perks a bit more. Hope this helps.

Then that shouldn't be level 5. That seems way too hard for the progression curve. I have to assume the next level is even harder? I prefer zen mode's progression so far.

yep, zen mode is perfect to generate cash to buy perks.

no, not every level after this is harder.
but there are a few tricky one's.
