Epic = NO BUY
I was so stoked for this game, and then I saw it REQUIRED an Epic account in order to play.
HARD PASS.
My girlfriend, friend, and I all play games together, so by REQUIRING Epic, you didn't lose out on one sale, you lost out on three.
So disappointing.

Edit: I'm going to unsubscribe from this discussion but for all the people who commented I just have to say, I AM SO GLAD I DODGED THIS BULLET. As of right now, 555 reviews on Steam, and they're Mixed. Critics are smashing this game to bits.

I would not want to be one of those suckers who actually bought the game - at least not in its current state.

Good job wasting your money!

Thanks for the head's up. I wasn't sure if this was the game for me, but after this thread it's clearly going to be a Day 1 purchase

So it's sold on steam but you must have an epic account to play? What kinda idiotic devs thought that was a great idea?

Consider another 8 of us also not getting the game now...

I cant see not liking Peer 2 Peer (for now), but the Epic aspect really isnt a big deal at all. In terms of ToA itself, the devs said this on their discord:

"You have the option to link an existing Epic account. If not, we will create one automatically for you! That's just how Epic Online Services (which is what we use for online play) works.

(I can confirm the latter part; Epic Services does have their own way of creating one automatically with no need for ToA to do anything special)

I note that googling about Epic Services, I could see that it also supports other types of multiplayer access besides P2P, including lobbies, matchmaking, etc; this might very well be how ToA intends to expand their multi-player services as they mentioned in the Q2 2025 roadmap. Also note that major games like Fortnite, Rocket League, Hades (according to EOS web page) and many others use this as well... and that according to their 2023 summations, there are currently 802M Epic Online Service users.

Clearly... its a good established standard, and something that a small development studio might use to cover all future forms of multi-player instead of reinventing the wheel.

So I looked up Epic on Wikipedia. They created the unreal engine which this game uses. Of course they have also created their own games and have taken on some really big companies like Google and Apple. Apparently they have made a few enemies along the way. Really my kind of people. I think I like them even more now.

Epic is fine, not great but they do handout a ton of free games. I guess it's your loss still weird to be that black and white it's not like a psn account with zero benefits.

Your loss... Epic is a great company who gives away tons of free games on a weekly basis. If you don't have an Epic account I question what kind of gamer you really are lol

The amount of people saying that will not get the game beacause of its extra launcher seems so extreme to me. It propably takes 10-20 seconds for the very first time to put your log and pass then if you click on save you dont have to do this again xd . Stop being awkward guys. Dont let a extra launcher ruin your mood.

No problem, I can make up for that by giving the game away to three friends, they'll be happy!

And none of them have a childish Epic phobia! So many games on Steam require a third-party account, that's absolutely nothing unusual!

Then you'll watch 10 minutes of gameplay, have a good night's sleep, and buy it while grumbling. As always, if the game is good, people pay. END.

Stop trying to make me believe you're going to boycott the game of your dreams just because it requires an Epic account.
I hope you're not that fragile.

Disappointed in you, one more to the block pile.
Devnos Nov 19, 2024 @ 8:05am
Uplay isnt owned by tencent and they dont exploit your private information.
pApA^LeGBa Nov 19, 2024 @ 8:08am
It´s probably a bunch of money they get for this. Pretty sure they would take much longer to release and do future updates without. Not a fan,of additional launchers, especially if it´s a data kraken like tencent, but if it´s really good i will still play it. If it´s just average i won´t install epic for it.
