Where to place mining town?

I can't seem to find a good spot for my mining town. I put my arid biome in that spot of desert near the big bridge, so that spot is out for the town, I opened up the northernmost section and there's some desert up there, but everywhere I try to place the town says either something is in the way or the floor won't support. I'm honestly about to give up. Does anyone have a specific recommendation for where to place the mining town? For a game that's supposed to allow you to build the world however you want, placing down towns and biomes feels very restrictive to me.

In case you haven't tried it, when you go to place try raising the elevation. That typically gets rid of several potential placement errors.

I looked at the Mining Town as a free place to put a portal where I would want one, so I put it up north near Elsi's Rest (sounded something like that). There is lots of room. Seemed like a good starting exploration portal to have when there are future expansions just North of that.

And I agree with Tenoshii; all my building placement issues were solved by raising the elevation my buildings (its a choice you have on the screen at the time). I mostly find it irritating though that its often just not obvious which orientation of the building is the front, so I often get it wrong... so my villages look pretty random :)

there are usually doors on them, so I look for a door. But your are right it does need some indication of what is the front.

I do know to raise and lower elevation and am still having trouble placing the town. I will try near Elsi's rest. Thank you.
