games like this play heavy into exploring and immersion. not having control over gender race and ect can influence that for many players. If they want to stand out and beat the mixed reviews yes id say its a needed feature.

Yes the pre-launch roadmap has changed. We will be releasing a Q2 roadmap this month.

I don't see how you can tell a gender. To me it looks like my character is a child with no definite way of determining a gender. I havent got far into the game tbh, so unless there is some reveal of you being a female. Even so, I don't really see what a big deal it would be.
